What a backup line covers and what it does not
A backup line living in the same phone as the main one covers problems with the line, not problems with the device. If the phone is lost, stolen, dropped in water or simply will not turn on, the backup inside it is gone too. This has to be said directly, because people often assume two lines means a fallback for every scenario, and it does not.
If what worries you is losing the phone, the real fallback is a second device, not a second line — an old handset that still works, carried in a different bag. That approach costs more and is more of a nuisance, so it suits trips where being uncontactable does genuine damage, such as work travel with fixed commitments, more than an ordinary holiday.
The whole idea of a backup line assumes your phone can hold more than one profile and keep at least two usable at the same time, and that varies by model and by operating system. Some devices store several profiles but only run one at a time; others run two together. This is a property of the hardware, not of the plan.
Before buying a backup plan, check your own device's limits: how many profiles it can hold, and whether it is network-locked. Those are separate issues but both affect whether this works. If you have to order and install one on the day the main line dies, you hit an obvious trap: installing a profile needs an internet connection, and the reason you are installing it is that you have no connection. One thing to be clear about is that travel plans do not all include the same services. Some are data-only, with no number for calls or SMS; others are set up differently. Before buying one as a backup, read what the plan actually includes — if you are counting on receiving an SMS code and the plan carries data only, you will discover it at the worst moment.
In practice the best protection is to move verification for important accounts onto an authenticator app or another channel that does not depend on SMS, before you leave. That removes the reliance on receiving messages abroad entirely, and it is far easier to arrange at home while you still have normal access to those accounts.
When the main line is down you may temporarily lose access to information you normally just look up. Keeping a small set of details offline on the device, or written on paper stored separately, helps a great deal in the first panicked minutes. The first rule is: delete nothing yet, especially not the main profile, because a deleted profile generally cannot be reinstalled. The first is that the phone will ask which line to use for mobile data, which for outgoing calls, and which for messages. The second is that some apps are tied to the number you first registered with. Adding a second line does not change those accounts automatically, and you do not need to change anything for them to keep working — as long as the app runs over the internet, swapping which line carries the data does not affect an account that is already signed in.
The third is battery. Keeping two lines active means maintaining a connection to two networks, which uses more power than one. If the backup is prepared but not needed yet, leaving it switched off helps the battery and prevents accidental switching at the same time.
Usually it does not need to be large, because the purpose is to get you back online while the main line is down, not to carry sustained heavy use.
