What Jeddah is like on a phone

Jeddah is a port city, easier-going than Riyadh, with the seafront at the centre of evening life. Arrivals here are a mix: people coming for the old town of Al-Balad and the Red Sea reefs, and people continuing on to Makkah — which keeps the airport busy year-round and exceptionally so in certain seasons. City coverage is broad, but it changes noticeably in the old lanes and on a boat out to the reef.

When you land

King Abdulaziz International (JED) has several terminal areas, including facilities used specifically for pilgrim traffic at certain times of year, so confirm which one your flight uses before arranging a pickup. The centre is thirty to forty minutes away. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft: after immigration you may need to reach a driver or a pre-booked transfer straight away, and the arrivals hall can be too crowded to find room to set anything up.

Where coverage changes

The Corniche and the newer northern districts hold a steady line, as do the malls and hotel strips. What changes is Al-Balad, where old timber houses and narrow lanes make your position drift and weaken the signal in some alleys. On a boat out to the offshore reefs it thins with distance from the coast and goes altogether once you are well out. In seasons when large numbers of travellers pass through, the network around the airport and the coach stations is busier than usual.

What a day here costs in data

A normal day is about 1–2GB across maps, rides and searching for places along the water. Film underwater clips and upload them nightly and you are nearer 3GB. In the busy seasons, text still goes through normally, but photos and video can slow markedly wherever people gather in numbers. The move that works is a short status message first, then uploading the pictures once you are back at your accommodation.

• Al-Balad — The old town of carved wooden houses and narrow lanes, liveliest after sunset; your position on the map drifts, so use a gate or a square as a meeting point rather than a pin.
• The Corniche — The long seafront where the city walks and sits out in the evening; strong the whole way and easy to get a car, though you should name a precise stopping point because the road runs a long way.
• The northern districts & Tahlia — Restaurants, cafés and modern hotels spread along wide avenues; a sensible base if you need to work during the trip, since the line is steady here.
• The marinas & dive jetties — Departure points for the reefs lie both north and south of the city; confirm the jetty name with your operator in advance, because several sound alike and sit far apart.

Day trips out of the city

• Taif — Two and a half hours east and uphill to a cooler town; the climb twists and the line cuts out in the valleys, so keep the route offline and fuel up before you start.
• Red Sea reef diving — Boats leave jetties near the city for half an hour to an hour; the line thins with distance from shore and is usually absent at the dive site, so tell someone your return time before sailing.
• The high-speed train to Madinah — From a station in the city and a few hours long; crossing the desert the line drops in stretches, so screenshot your ticket and check the conditions of travel with an official source before booking.
