Angola draws visitors for business as much as for travel. Luanda is a large city where traffic is heavy and short distances swallow a lot of time, so live maps genuinely help when you are due at a meeting or a flight. Language is the other daily factor: Portuguese is the official language and English is less widely spoken than many people expect, which puts a translation app in near-constant use once you step outside hotels and offices.
This page carries 9 eSIM plans for Angola, riding on Unitel / Africell Angola with 3G / 4G support. Install the profile at home before you fly; the plan starts counting when the phone first registers on a network at the destination.

Estimate about 800MB–1.5GB a day for maps, translation, messaging and work email. If you join online meetings from the hotel every day or tether a laptop to the phone, budget nearer 2.5GB a day.
The main gateway is Luanda, which has opened the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ) south of the city, taking over the role of the older Quatro de Fevereiro airport (LAD). Regional fields include Lubango (SDD) and Catumbela (CBT), which serves Benguela and Lobito. Turn the line on as soon as you land, since pickups and hotel confirmations are usually handled by message rather than at a counter.
Coverage is dense in Luanda, Benguela, Lobito, Lubango and Huambo, and along the main roads linking the coastal cities. It thins in the Namibe desert in the south, across rural Cuando Cubango and Cunene provinces, on the long inland stretches of the Benguela railway heading east, and on the approach to the Kalandula Falls, which runs through open country for a considerable distance.

Always allow more time than the map suggests, because Luanda's traffic changes quickly with the hour and the state of the roads. What works is checking the live route before every trip, asking the hotel to arrange a car for anything important, and messaging the other party the moment you know you will be late. Saving the destination as a pin in advance helps a lot, since written addresses often do not match the point a car can actually reach.
It is slower, but manageable. International hotels and business circles have English speakers; drivers, shops and most officials work in Portuguese. What helps most is downloading the offline Portuguese pack before you fly, using conversation mode for anything longer than a sentence, and keeping ready-made lines in a note — your hotel name, the address you are heading to — so you can show them straight away even when there is no signal to translate on the spot.
In the towns themselves — Lubango, Malanje — it works normally, but the roads between them cross a lot of open country where service weakens or disappears for stretches. Before leaving the city, save the outbound and return route offline, fill the tank, tell the hotel roughly when you expect to be back, and plan to arrive in daylight, because some sections of road are uneven and signage is sparse once you are away from the main corridors.
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
