Before you buy for French Polynesia
Every French Polynesia eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.
How much data you actually need
About 500MB to 1GB a day, because most of the time you are in the water or on a boat. Data goes to checking ferry times, messaging your accommodation and uploading photos once you are back in the room.
When you land
The gateway is Faaa International at Tahiti (PPT), next to Papeete, with domestic hops onward to Bora Bora (BOB), Moorea (MOZ), Rangiroa (RGI) or Nuku Hiva (NHV). The other main entry to a second island is the short ferry from Papeete harbour to Moorea. Get the line running at PPT, because domestic connections often mean re-checking a gate and a departure time.
Where coverage changes
Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora are well covered around the main villages, the ferry quays and the resort strips, though some overwater bungalows sit far enough out that the signal weakens. In the Tuamotus, at Rangiroa and Fakarava, and in the deep valleys of the Marquesas, service exists mainly around the village. Boat crossings between islands are effectively offline.

Do overwater bungalows have signal and wi-fi?+
Most resorts provide wi-fi in the room or at least in the lobby, but quality varies a lot between properties. Mobile signal weakens the further out along the pier your bungalow sits. If you need to work or make a video call, plan to do it on shore or in the lobby and download what you need in advance.
Should I island-hop by plane or by ferry?+
Papeete to Moorea is easy and frequent by ferry. Further out, Bora Bora, Rangiroa and the Marquesas are essentially flight-only. Book ahead and leave a generous connection window at Tahiti, since some domestic routes run only a few times a day.
Do I need cash, or are cards accepted?+
Resorts, town restaurants and supermarkets generally take cards, but small pensions, roadside stalls and some boat operators are cash-only in Pacific francs. Withdraw cash in Papeete or the main village of an island, because small atolls may not have an ATM at all.
When does a French Polynesia eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
