How much data you actually need
About 500MB–1GB a day covers maps, train times and photos. If you are filming during the Grand Prix and uploading as you go, budget 2GB a day or more.
When you land
Monaco has no airport: everyone comes through Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE), about 30 km away, then takes the 110 express bus, a helicopter transfer, or a TER train from Nice to the wholly underground Monaco–Monte-Carlo station. Coastal trains from Ventimiglia on the Italian side arrive the same way. Get your line running back in Nice, because the station has several exits and the wrong one means a long uphill walk.
Where coverage changes
The whole state is dense city and works nearly everywhere, from Monte-Carlo and La Condamine to the old town on the Rock and Fontvieille. Where it stutters is the underground station, the road tunnels that form part of the race circuit, and the public lifts that connect the different levels of town. Along the French border a handset also flips onto a French network very easily, which matters for what you are charged.

Does Monaco count as France on a data plan?+
Do not assume so. Monaco is an independent state outside the European Union, and plans often list it separately from France or not at all. Check the country list on the plan before buying, and if you are staying several days pick one that names Monaco explicitly rather than just saying Europe.
What changes during the Grand Prix?+
Streets become the circuit and close in stages several days before the race, footpaths are rerouted, and temporary bridges are the only way across in places. Hotels and trains fill early, so book ahead and save your walking route offline — finding your way back late at night without data is far harder than it sounds.
Is it better to stay in Nice and visit for the day?+
Many people do, because trains from Nice take around twenty-odd minutes and run frequently, which saves a lot on accommodation. The trade-off is crossing a border twice a day, so your phone keeps switching networks; the simplest answer is a plan that covers both France and Monaco rather than one of them.
When does a Monaco eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
