Every Guinea eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.
How much data you actually need
Budget roughly 400MB–1GB a day for messaging, maps and translation. If you upload photos or work from a hotel in Conakry, plan closer to 1.5GB a day.
When you land
The main gateway is Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport (CKY) in Conakry, which sits inside the city and is slow to leave in evening traffic. Overland arrivals come from Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone or Liberia, and several border posts close early in the evening, so switch your line on and confirm the plan with your driver before you reach the gate.
Where coverage changes
Conakry and the bigger towns — Kindia, Kankan, Labé, Nzérékoré — are generally usable. Up in the Fouta Djallon around Dalaba, Pita, the Doucki escarpment and the Ditinn falls, valleys swallow the signal. On the long road from Conakry to Kankan and around the Nimba range there are stretches of several hours with nothing at all.

Can I get around Guinea without French?+
Yes, but prepare for it. French is the official language and Susu, Pular and Malinké are widely spoken; English mostly appears in larger Conakry hotels. What should I plan for signal-wise in the Fouta Djallon?+
Treat the hiking days as fully offline. Some highland villages have service, but the valleys and the trails down to the waterfalls usually do not. Save offline maps for the whole area, store your guide's number and meeting point before you set out, and leave an expected return time with your lodging, because re-arranging a rendezvous mid-route without data is genuinely hard.
How far will a card get me in Guinea?+
Not very far. Shops, shared transport and small guesthouses run on cash in Guinean francs, and cards work mainly at a handful of larger Conakry hotels. ATMs exist in the capital and bigger towns but are unreliable, so draw what you need before heading upcountry and keep your booking details saved offline in case you lose data at the wrong moment.
