How much data you actually need

Roughly 600MB–1.2GB a day covers maps, chat and photos. If you film in Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang and upload each night, allow around 1.5–2GB a day.

When you land

The main airports are Wattay in Vientiane (VTE), Luang Prabang (LPQ) and Pakse (PKZ). Overland from Thailand you use the First Friendship Bridge at Nong Khai, the Fourth Bridge at Chiang Khong–Houayxay, or the Chong Mek–Vangtao crossing. From China the entry point is Boten–Mohan, served by both road and railway.

Where coverage changes

Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang are usable throughout the town areas. Along Route 13 through the northern mountains, around Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi, on the Bolaven Plateau and down at Si Phan Don, the signal cuts out for long stretches. The Laos–China Railway also runs through tunnel after tunnel, so data comes and goes.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Vientiane — Good across town, including the Mekong riverfront and night market.
  • Luang Prabang — Fine in the old town; weaker out at the Kuang Si waterfalls.
  • Vang Vieng — Usable in town; caves and river activities usually have nothing.
  • Pakse — Adequate in town, patchy once you climb the Bolaven Plateau.
  • Si Phan Don — Only pockets of signal on the islands; save an offline map first.

Does data work on the Laos–China Railway?+

Intermittently. The line runs through a great many tunnels in the mountains, so service disappears inside them and returns in open country. If you need to send work or make a call, deal with it before boarding, and download your ticket and a map of the destination to the phone beforehand.

What do I do with my phone crossing the Friendship Bridge from Nong Khai?+

Install the eSIM profile on the Thai side while you still have Wi-Fi, then enable the line after you clear Lao immigration. If the handset is still holding a Thai tower, toggle flight mode once to force a fresh network search, and check that data roaming is switched on for that line.

Can I buy train tickets online in advance?+

On busy dates the Vientiane–Luang Prabang seats sell out quickly, so many travellers ask their guesthouse or a local agency to buy on their behalf — the most reliable route if you have no Lao bank account. Arrange it in advance over chat and leave time to collect the ticket before your travel day.

What should I prepare for Nong Khiaw or Muang Ngoi in the north?+

Download an offline map of the whole route and save your accommodation address as an image, because the mountain road loses signal for long stretches and Muang Ngoi is reached by boat on top of that. Bring a power bank as well: some guesthouses only have electricity for part of the day.

When does a Laos eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
