How much data you actually need
A driving trip here runs at roughly 800MB to 1.5GB a day, because turn-by-turn navigation stays on for most of the daylight hours, on top of looking up restaurants and booking boat trips. Add video calls home or an upload every night and it lands nearer 2GB a day.
When you land
The gateway is Martinique Aimé Césaire International (FDF) at Le Lamentin, a few kilometres from Fort-de-France. By sea there is the cruise berth in the capital and the inter-island fast ferry to Guadeloupe, Dominica and Saint Lucia, which leaves from the passenger terminal in Fort-de-France. The crossing people use daily is the vedette across the bay from the city waterfront to Les Trois-Îlets. Switch the line on at the airport, because collecting a rental car and finding your way out of Le Lamentin needs the map immediately.
Where coverage changes
Service is dense across the central urban belt and the south coast: Fort-de-France, Schoelcher and Le Lamentin down through Sainte-Luce to Sainte-Anne, and around the yachting harbour at Le Marin. It genuinely thins on the climb up Mont Pelée, along the cliff road on the northern Atlantic coast towards Grand-Rivière, out on the Caravelle peninsula, and on the long coastal hiking route on the eastern side known as the Trace des Caps. Martinique is France — does a Europe plan just work there?+
Do not assume so. Martinique is a French overseas department and part of the European Union, but travel plans sold as a Europe region usually cover countries on the European continent and do not automatically include Caribbean overseas territories. Open the plan's territory list and look for Martinique by name; if it is not there, pick a plan that names it. A SIM issued by an EU operator is a separate case, and that one is a question for your home provider.
Do I need to rent a car, or is public transport enough?+
If you want to see the whole island, nearly everyone rents a car: the bus network is built around local journeys in and near the capital, not around beach-hopping in the south and then driving north on the same day. If you would rather not drive, the workable version is to stay at Les Trois-Îlets or Sainte-Anne and rely on walking plus the boat across the bay, with a driver hired by the day for the trip north — which you can arrange ahead by message.
How should I prepare for signal on Mont Pelée or the road to Grand-Rivière?+
Both lose service in patches, one because you are high on a volcano and the other because ridgelines shadow a cliff road. Download the map for the northern half of the island in advance, save the trailhead parking and the route name before you leave your accommodation, and plan to be back before dark: cloud comes down on the summit in the afternoon, and finding the path down in fog without an offline map is a situation worth avoiding.
If I take the fast ferry to Guadeloupe or Dominica, does the same plan work?+
Not necessarily. Each island here is a separate territory as far as networks go, and even Guadeloupe, which is also France, is counted separately in many plans. Check the plan's territory list against every island you intend to stop at before you travel; if it does not cover them all, a multi-country plan is the simpler answer from the start. No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
