What Gold Coast is like on a phone

The Gold Coast is a holiday town for families and groups of friends rather than a working city. Plenty of Thai visitors arrive with children for the theme parks and the surf, so the rhythm of a day is a late start, a long stretch on the sand, dinner, and only then a look at tomorrow. The beachfront is a wall of towers along the water, and the line generally works well there, though a phone standing between the high-rises and the open sea sometimes hops between masts and hesitates for a moment. What needs allowing for is the two edges of the trip: a day inside a theme park and a drive up into the ranges behind town, which could not behave more differently.

When you land

Gold Coast Airport (OOL) at Coolangatta is a single modest terminal — you are out of the door quickly, and the beach is remarkably close. Many people arrive via Brisbane instead, since there are fewer direct flights, and then travel down by road or rail. Whichever way you come, have the eSIM live before you step off the aircraft, because confirming a pickup or checking a train is the first thing you will do. If you land in Brisbane, allow more time for the leg south than the timetable suggests. In town a light rail line runs along the coastal strip and ties the main precincts together; the sections linking it further out have been built and extended in stages, so check the current route with the transport operator rather than an old map.

Where coverage changes

Along the sand from Surfers Paradise down to Coolangatta the line is continuous, and the light rail keeps it too. The odd part is inside the tower canyon itself: standing in the shadow of the beachfront blocks, speeds sometimes sag for a moment and then recover on their own. Go up into the rainforest at Springbrook or Tamborine and the picture changes completely — the road climbs, the canopy closes over, and there are stretches with nothing at all, particularly on the tracks down to the falls at the bottom of a gorge. If a glow worm walk or any night tour up there is in the plan, assume no service for the whole outing and set everything up beforehand.

What a day here costs in data

A pure beach day costs surprisingly little, since the phone spends most of it in a bag. A theme park day is the opposite: the park's own app for queue times and maps, a constant stream of where shall we meet messages, and video of the children from opening to close. Add a drive into the hinterland with navigation running and the total drifts to around 1.5–2GB. In this much sun the screen goes to full brightness, and the battery will always run out before the data does. Leave the video calls home for the evening on the accommodation Wi-Fi.

• Surfers Paradise — The heart of the tower strip, with a beachfront night market. The line works, though uploads slow on a busy weekend evening when the footpath is shoulder to shoulder. Handle the phone the way you would in any crowded tourist strip.
• Broadbeach — An easier grid to walk, with a tram stop in the middle of it and restaurants either side. Service is even along the streets and in the beachfront park, which makes checking a menu or booking a table on the move straightforward.
• Burleigh Heads — A headland with a short walking track that climbs through coastal bush. The lookouts at the top are fine; the shaded section of the path weakens for a while, which matters not at all as long as you were not planning to look something up halfway.
• Coolangatta and Currumbin — The southern end, next to the airport and right on the state border. At certain times of year the clocks on the two sides do not match, so check the local time before you fix a meeting or work out your check-in deadline.

Day trips out of the city

• Springbrook and Natural Bridge — The road up winds under heavy canopy and there are places with genuinely no service, especially on the paths down to the cave and the falls. If you are going up for a night tour, download the map and agree on a meeting point before you start climbing.
• Tamborine Mountain — The village along the ridge has shops and a decent signal, but turn off onto the forest walks or head for the treetop walkway and it drops in patches. Have any tickets and the address saved to the phone before you leave the village.
• Byron Bay — Driving south crosses into another state. The highway keeps service, while the smaller roads into the hinterland villages break up in patches. The other thing to watch is the clock: at some times of year the two sides of the border do not agree, so check the current local time before you arrange to meet anyone.
