What Krabi is like on a phone

Krabi draws people who want sea with cliffs standing in it: climbers who settle in for a month, families based at Ao Nang, and travellers using the province as a gateway to the outer islands. The geology — sheer limestone towers rising straight out of flat ground — makes the connection story here unlike other coastal towns, because those walls really do block the signal at close range. One beach can be entirely comfortable while the next one, behind the same headland, is not.

When you land

Most people land at Krabi airport (KBV), out to the east of town. Turn the line on while still on board, because shared vans and private cars all gather on the forecourt and you will be reading signs and messaging a driver from the moment you walk out. The other common entry is by boat from Lanta or Phi Phi into Klong Jilad pier, a short ride from Krabi town. On the drive to Ao Nang the road cuts through rubber plantations past isolated limestone hills; service holds, but you can feel it is less even than in town.

Where coverage changes

Krabi town and the beachfront road at Ao Nang are fully covered, with accommodation and shops packed along them. What makes this place different is what happens behind a limestone wall: Railay and Phra Nang have no road access at all, so you cross by long-tail, and although the distance from Ao Nang is short, the cliff in between leaves the signal uneven from one end of the sand to the other. Directly under the climbing walls it is markedly harder to use than out on the open beach. On the crossing itself the line thins mid-water and returns as you close on the shore.

What a day here costs in data

An ordinary day is light on data, roughly 600MB to 1.2GB, because you walk between the beach and dinner rather than navigating long distances. Boat days change the pattern: people shoot all day and then upload the whole batch in the evening, which happens to be when every other boat has just come back in, so it feels slower than usual. Check the boat timetable and the forecast in the morning from your room rather than standing on the pier.

• Ao Nang — The beachfront strip where everything happens, restaurants and ticket desks alike; coverage runs the length of it, which makes it the place to finish every booking before you head anywhere else.
• Railay — A peninsula cut off from the road network by cliffs and reachable only by boat; the open west side works better than the east side and the ground directly beneath the climbing walls.
• Nopparat Thara — A long, quieter beach with the national park pier at its end; with open ground and no cliff in the way the line is consistent, which makes it a comfortable place to wait for a boat and still look things up.
• Krabi town — The working town of offices and a riverside market; coverage behaves like any ordinary town, and it is where people tend to settle their online errands before moving out to the islands.

Day trips out of the city

• The four-island tour — Long-tails or speedboats out of Ao Nang calling at the sandbar and Poda; on the runs between islands the line goes, while out on the exposed sand spit some service occasionally returns.
• Emerald Pool and the hot springs — An hour east into forest; the car park is fine, but the boardwalk in through swamp forest gets quieter the further you go, so agree a rendezvous with your group before you split up.
• Koh Lanta — Reachable by boat or by road across two bridges; on the bridges and through the villages you have service, but the coastal road running south into the park thins out enough that you want the map downloaded first.
