How much data you actually need
Along the coast a day runs about 800MB to 1.5GB, because you are driving long stretches of a single highway with the map open, translating as you go and messaging guides. If you upload footage of a launch or video shot in the forest, expect to go past 2GB a day.
When you land
The air gateway is Cayenne–Félix Éboué (CAY) at Matoury, just outside Cayenne. There are two real land crossings: in the east, the bridge over the Oyapock at Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock connects to Oiapoque in Brazil, and in the west Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni faces Albina in Suriname across the Maroni, which you cross by boat. Reaching interior villages such as Maripasoula is done only by light aircraft or by pirogue upriver, so plan the connectivity for those legs separately.
Where coverage changes
Service is concentrated on the coastal strip where the roads and towns are: Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni through Sinnamary and Kourou to Cayenne and Rémire-Montjoly. Step off that and it thins quickly, above all on the southern road that cuts through forest to Saint-Georges. The deep interior — the Maroni and Oyapock river basins, villages such as Maripasoula and Saül, and the Îles du Salut off Kourou — should be planned for as time without a network. Near the borders, watch for the handset attaching to a Brazilian or Surinamese network across the river.

Before you leave, save offline maps, keep your guide's and lodge's numbers on the device, tell someone in town when you are due back, and carry a power bank, because in many villages the electricity runs for set hours rather than all day.

Check the latest launch time while you are still in town, save the viewing spot and the parking offline, agree a meeting point with your group in advance in case messages will not go through, and allow for the schedule slipping at short notice because of weather, which happens regularly.
