How much data you actually need
A typical visitor uses roughly 300MB to 1GB a day: offline maps, messaging lodges and boat operators, and sending photos home in the evening. If you dive and upload video every night, budget closer to 2GB a day, and add more again if other people in your group tether off your line.
When you land
The main gateway is Honiara International (HIR) on Guadalcanal, with international flights mostly from Brisbane, Port Moresby and Nadi. Domestic strips travellers actually use are Munda (MUA), Gizo (GZO) and Auki (AKS). The other genuine entry point is the sea: passenger ships leave Honiara wharf for Malaita and the Western Province. Get your line attached at HIR before the domestic connection, because onward legs almost always need a call or message to confirm.
Where coverage changes
Coverage is densest in Honiara and along the north coast of Guadalcanal, then in the provincial towns — Gizo, Munda, Auki and Kirakira. Once you leave those for coastal villages, the Marovo Lagoon, Choiseul, Rennell and Bellona, or the far eastern Temotu province, service thins to nothing for a day at a time, and there is effectively none while a boat is out in open water. Download maps, tickets and any document you need onto the phone before you leave a provincial centre.

Will I have signal on inter-island flights and boats?+
Practically none. Domestic turboprop legs are short but spend the whole time over water, and inter-island ships run for hours or overnight, with service returning only as you approach a settled coast. Treat travel days as offline days: finish anything that needs a connection before you board, including maps, tickets, the address of your lodge, and a message to whoever is meeting you at the other end.
What should I prepare before staying in a village on an outer island?+
Prepare to function without a connection. Download the map area, save the lodge owner and any local coordinator as contacts on the device, keep tickets and booking confirmations as offline files, and bring a power bank, because many villages run on a generator or solar for part of the day only. It also helps to tell people at home when you realistically expect to be reachable again, which is usually when you are back in a provincial town.
Can I rely on cards and ATMs in the Solomon Islands?+
Honiara has ATMs and a reasonable number of places that take cards, but once you are on the outer islands almost everything is cash. Withdraw enough Solomon Islands dollars while you are still in the capital or a provincial town, and keep small notes for boat fares, village guesthouses and the customary access fees some communities charge. Data helps you check a balance or tell your bank you are travelling, but it will not make an outer island accept a card.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
