What Seville is like on a phone

Seville draws people here for the Moorish architecture, for the big spring festivals, and as a base for the rest of Andalusia. The old town is a maze of cobbled lanes under three metres wide, which affects knowing where you are far more than it affects signal strength. In high summer the thing that runs out first is usually not data but battery, because a hot handset works harder to hold the map open in direct sun.

When you land

San Pablo (SVQ) is a short ride out, with the EA bus running into the centre, while high-speed trains arrive at Santa Justa, close enough to walk or take a short ride from. Turn the eSIM on in the terminal or before you get off the train, because old-town accommodation is often down a lane a driver will not find without a map. The ride in holds a connection; once you are in the lanes themselves, follow the street names painted on the walls rather than the pin.

Where coverage changes

The big squares and the banks of the Guadalquivir are open and easy. The lanes of Santa Cruz are narrow and crooked enough to throw your map pin from one street to the next. Inside the cathedral and the Alcázar, with their thick walls and shaded courtyards, the speed is uneven. Climb the Giralda above the rooftops and it improves at once. During the big festivals, with hundreds of thousands in one part of town, that whole district slows for the evening.

A Seville day means a lot of walking and a map reopened constantly, because the lanes tangle, plus booking Alcázar entry, finding somewhere open during the afternoon closures, and photographing tilework and fountain courtyards. • Santa Cruz — The tight maze beside the cathedral, and the part of town where the map is wrong most often; remember fountains and archways as markers.
• Triana — Across the river, with wider streets and an open riverside walk; it runs smoothly and is an easy place for an evening call home.
• Alameda and Macarena — Where locals sit out in the evening; the open plaza helps, though on Friday and Saturday nights that bandwidth is shared with everyone else on it.
• El Arenal and the cathedral quarter — Where day visitors concentrate from mid-morning onward, and the speed dips in the hours when several timed sessions start at once.

Day trips out of the city

• Córdoba — A short high-speed hop with a good connection throughout, but inside the Mezquita, a vast pillared hall behind thick walls, the speed falls away; have the ticket saved before you go in.
• Ronda — The route climbs into the sierra with long thin or empty stretches; the town perches on the edge of a gorge and holds well up on the rim, while the path down into the ravine weakens sharply.
• Cádiz — The train runs out onto a peninsula that pushes into the sea, with good service along the open bay; the very tight old-town lanes near the water put your position out much as Seville's do.
