Togo eSIM
Togo is a narrow strip running from the Gulf of Guinea coast up into northern savannah, so most trips are simply a series of hops along one road: from Lome into the coffee hills at Kpalime, then north to Kara and the mud-tower villages of Koutammakou. The capital sits right against the Ghanaian border, close enough to walk across, which is why many visitors arrive overland rather than by air. In town, transport means motorbike taxis, now bookable through an app, and nearly every arrangement is settled on WhatsApp.

How much data you actually need
A normal visitor uses roughly 400MB–1GB a day on messaging, maps and hailing motorbikes around town. If you upload clips or video call home every evening, budget nearer 1.5GB a day.
When you land
The gateway is Lome–Tokoin, also called Gnassingbe Eyadema International (LFW), only a few kilometres from central Lome, with flights connecting mainly through Paris, Abidjan, Accra and Addis Ababa. Overland, the crossing people use most is Kodjoviakope in Lome itself, which meets Aflao on the Ghanaian side; Hillacondji to the east leads into Benin, and Cinkasse in the far north leads into Burkina Faso.
Where coverage changes
Coverage is densest in Lome and along the coast towards Aneho, and it follows the northern highway through the larger towns of Atakpame, Sokode and Kara. Step off that main road — into the hills around Kpalime and Mount Agou, into Fazao-Malfakassa National Park, or out to the villages of the Koutammakou area near the Benin border — and it thins and cuts in and out, so download that map section before you leave the last big town.

Can I cross into Ghana for the day from Lome?+
The distance is trivial — the Kodjoviakope post sits at the edge of Lome and you walk across into Aflao. The thing to check is paperwork: leaving and re-entering depends on what kind of visa you hold for each country, so confirm the current rules before you set off. Leave plenty of time at the post as well, because passport queues get long in the morning and again in the evening.
Does data still work when I head north to Kara and Koutammakou?+
In Atakpame, Sokode and Kara it behaves normally. Once you turn off the highway towards the Koutammakou villages, in the hills near the Benin border, you can be out of range for half an hour or more at a stretch. Download that map area, save your driver's number to the device, and agree pickup points and times while you are still in town rather than assuming you can call from the villages.
Can I really hail rides in Lome with an app, or do I have to bargain?+
You really can: Gozem runs both motorbikes and cars in Lome, which removes the haggling and leaves you a record of the ride. Street motorbike taxis, the zemidjan, are still everywhere and are often quicker in rush hour; if you use one, agree the fare before you get on and hold your phone securely while riding, because some stretches of road are rough.
When does a Togo eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
