Sint Maarten eSIM
Sint Maarten shares one island with two administrations: the Dutch south and the French north, with no checkpoint between them. The consequence few travellers expect is that a phone can hop onto a network from the other side while you drive near the boundary, so it matters which side your plan actually covers. The island is also the connecting hub for boats and small flights to Anguilla, Saba and St Barthélemy, whose schedules move with the swell.

How much data you actually need
A typical stay uses about 600MB to 1.4GB a day for maps, bookings, checking inter-island boat times and photos. If you are basing yourself here for a longer stay and working remotely, plan on 2–3GB a day, plus whatever a second device pulls through your hotspot.
When you land
The main airport is Princess Juliana (SXM) on the Dutch side, with Maho Beach at the end of the runway, while the French side has the small Grand-Case field for turboprops. By sea, boats run from Marigot to Blowing Point on Anguilla, and from Great Bay to Saba and St Barthélemy. Turn the line on at SXM and check that the phone is actually attached to a Dutch-side network before you leave the terminal.
Where coverage changes
Service is good across Philipsburg, Simpson Bay, Maho and the roads around the Simpson Bay lagoon. The area to watch is anywhere near the boundary — the climbs towards Cul-de-Sac and Oyster Pond — where a handset may switch to a French-side network on its own. Out on the water, crossings to Anguilla or Saba lose signal in the middle as a matter of course.

Does my plan still work if I drive to the French side?+
It depends on which territories the plan lists, because the Dutch and French sides count as separate destinations on the network even though you can drive across without stopping. If you plan to spend time on both, check before buying whether the plan covers each of them. The other option is to set network selection to manual so the handset does not drift onto a side you are not covered for.
Why does my phone change networks by itself while driving?+
The island is narrow and towers on both sides are within easy reach of each other, so the handset simply picks the strongest signal at that moment, which can belong to the other jurisdiction. The fix is to open mobile network settings, turn off automatic selection, and choose an operator on the side your plan covers. If you lose service entirely, switch back to automatic briefly and then set it again.
Do I need another plan for a day trip to Saba or St Barthélemy?+
For a there-and-back day, usually not: you are only ashore for a few hours and can keep data off while you are there. Save the return ticket, the meeting time and the map to your device before you sail. If you intend to stay overnight or work from the island, look for a plan that names it directly, because both are separate destinations from Sint Maarten.
When does a Sint Maarten eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
