What Cappadocia is like on a phone

Cappadocia is not one town but a cluster of villages on the central plateau, with Göreme and Uçhisar the usual bases. People come for the balloons before dawn, for walking the valleys, and to sleep in cave hotels. The day starts before first light and goes quiet in the afternoon. In the villages and along the main roads the line behaves normally, but down in the valleys between rock walls, and in the underground cities, it changes markedly.

When you land

Most people fly into Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) and take a shuttle in, forty-five minutes to an hour and a quarter. The other common route is the overnight coach from Istanbul or Ankara, arriving at Nevşehir bus station for a connecting transfer. Turn the line on before leaving the aircraft or the coach, because you will need to reach your hotel or the shuttle driver straight away, and the village streets are narrow enough that large vehicles can only stop in certain places.

Where coverage changes

In Göreme, Uçhisar and along the roads between villages the line is normal. In a balloon before dawn there is usually service, since you are high with the villages below, though it sways as you drift over a deep valley. The clear changes are the walking routes in the Love and Rose valleys, where high rock walls cut you off for stretches, and the underground cities such as Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, which go down enough levels that there is nothing at all — assume you are unreachable the whole time you are below.

What a day here costs in data

A normal day is about 1–1.5GB, the villages being small and most of it on foot, but a balloon day jumps: people film long clips and upload them the moment they land, so allow around 3GB for that one. Booking a flight and confirming a four-in-the-morning pickup happens mostly by message, so make sure the phone has charge and the alert sound is on. Valley hikes use little, since much of the time there is no service anyway.

Districts travellers ask about

• Göreme — The central village with the densest cluster of cave hotels and the pickup point for most tours; the streets are narrow and steep, so confirm with your hotel where a shuttle can actually stop before you arrive.
• Uçhisar — The higher village with a rock citadel giving a wide view; good coverage thanks to the elevation, and where people watch the balloons from the ground at dawn without flying.
• Avanos — The riverside town known for pottery, quieter than Göreme and with places to eat by the water; check the evening transport back, since public services between villages are infrequent.
• The Love & Rose valleys — Walking routes between high rock walls where the line cuts out in stretches; start early, download the trail offline, and tell your hotel when you expect to be back.

Day trips out of the city

• The underground city at Derinkuyu — Forty minutes south; inside it descends several levels with no service at all, through narrow low passages — agree with your group which exit you will meet at before going down.
• The Ihlara valley — Ninety minutes south-west, then down into a deep streamside gorge where there is next to nothing; agree your exit point with the driver beforehand, since the stairways up are several and far apart.
• Lake Tuz — An hour and a half north-west to a vast salt lake; the ground is so open that the line usually holds, but there is no shade and no shops — carry water and avoid the harshest midday sun.
