What Venice is like on a phone

Venice takes in people staying two or three nights in the old city, day-trippers coming across from Mestre, and cruise passengers ashore for the middle of the day. The network reaches everywhere, but your phone behaves differently here than in a normal city, because there are no roads: every journey is on foot or on water, and lanes under two metres wide with tall walls on both sides make working out where you are harder than getting a signal in the first place. Plenty of visitors find that data works fine and they are still lost.

When you land

The main way in is Marco Polo (VCE), with many low-cost flights landing at Treviso (TSF); trains arrive at Santa Lucia, which puts you straight onto the Grand Canal. Turn the eSIM on in the terminal or before you get off the train, because you will need a boat ticket or an accommodation confirmation within minutes of arriving. From the airport you can take a bus to Piazzale Roma or the Alilaguna boat across the lagoon, and out on open water away from either shore the connection thins before it firms up again near the city. Cruise passengers should switch the line on up on deck while land is still in view.

Where coverage changes

Open ground — the basin at San Marco, the banks of the Grand Canal — holds up well. Deep in the lanes of Cannaregio and Castello the strength drops, and more importantly the satellite signal bounces until your pin hops across a canal. On a vaporetto running along the city it is normal service, but heading out to the far islands such as Torcello there is a stretch of open lagoon where it weakens enough that nothing will load. During a festival, or on a day when several ships are in at once, speeds around San Marco fall simply because everyone is standing in the same place.

What a day here costs in data

Venice spends more than its size suggests, because you reopen the map every time a lane dead-ends at water or a bridge appears where you did not expect one. Add checking boat times, booking a slot at the Doge's Palace, translating street names written the Venetian way, and photographing nearly every corner. Most people land around 1 to 1.5GB a day; if you film from the boat and upload as you go, or go live at sunset from the Accademia bridge, budget well above that.

Districts travellers ask about

• San Marco — The open piazza gives a clean line to the network, yet it is the most crowded point in the city, so midday speeds follow the headcount rather than the geography.
• Cannaregio — Where people actually live, and much quieter; its long lanes run parallel to the canals, which makes following a map easier here than anywhere else in the city.
• Dorsoduro — The gallery side, with the Zattere waterfront opening straight onto the lagoon — an easier place to call home or push photos out than the middle of the old city.
• Castello and the Arsenale — The further east you walk from San Marco the thinner the crowds and the steadier the connection, though the innermost lanes still put your dot a canal away from where you are standing.

Day trips out of the city

• Murano, Burano and Torcello — The vaporetto crosses open lagoon, and out in the middle the connection weakens to the point that sharing a photo fails, returning as you come alongside each island. Save the timetable to the device, since sailings change with the season.
• The Lido — A long island with actual roads, so your position on the map behaves far better than in the old city, and the seaward beach is open enough to work comfortably.
• Padua — A short train ride with an almost unbroken connection, and the moment you arrive the wider streets make navigation straightforward again; book the Scrovegni Chapel slot ahead, as the number admitted per session is limited.
