How much data you actually need
Roughly 800MB–1.5GB a day for maps, messaging, confirming domestic flights and reading up on sites as you go. Budget more if you plan to join online meetings during a long connection in Addis Ababa.
When you land
The main gateway is Bole International in Addis Ababa (ADD), a large regional connecting hub. Domestic routes use Bahir Dar (BJR), Gondar (GDQ), Lalibela (LLI), Dire Dawa (DIR) and Mekele (MQX). If you have a long layover in Addis, switching the line on as you step off the aircraft lets you check the gate and tell whoever is waiting at the far end what is happening.
Where coverage changes
Addis Ababa works well across the city, including along the light rail line, and northern towns such as Bahir Dar, Gondar and Lalibela have service in their built-up areas. Where it genuinely thins out is the long intercity road stretches across the highlands, the trekking routes in the Simien Mountains, and remote regions such as the Danakil Depression and the Omo Valley. Why do meeting times get confused in Ethiopia?+
Because many people count the hours from sunrise, so the number spoken out loud can sit several hours away from what your phone screen shows, and the Ethiopian calendar does not match the international one either. When you arrange a driver or guide, repeat the time in a written message and state clearly whether it is international clock time or local reckoning. Data helps here more than anywhere: a written confirmation beats a verbal one.
What should I save offline for the northern route?+
Save your domestic flight tickets, accommodation confirmations, drivers' numbers and the map of each town before you leave Addis Ababa, because the intercity road stretches are long and coverage comes and goes. If you are trekking in the Simien Mountains, plan as though there is no signal for the whole route and agree an evening check-in window with people at home for when you are back at the lodge.
Is it worth activating a plan for a short layover in Addis?+
It depends on what you need to get done while you wait. For a two or three hour connection with nothing urgent, airport Wi-Fi usually suffices. If you have a meeting, need to confirm accommodation at your destination, or have to rearrange things because a flight slipped, your own plan is far less stressful than relying on a public network that everyone in the terminal is using during the same connection wave.
When does a Ethiopia eSIM start counting days?+

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
