How much data you actually need
Expect roughly 500MB–1.5GB a day, most of it going to maps, weather apps you refresh far more often than at home, and photo uploads. If you film the cliffs and upload every evening, or tether the other people in the rental car, budget closer to 2GB a day.
When you land
There is one international airport, Vágar (FAE) on the island of Vágar, about 45 minutes from Tórshavn through a sub-sea tunnel. The other way in is by sea: Smyril Line's Norröna sails from Hirtshals in Denmark and Seyðisfjörður in Iceland and docks in Tórshavn. Get the line attached while you are still in the terminal, or before the ship berths, so you can confirm the rental car and the guesthouse straight away.
Where coverage changes
Tórshavn, Klaksvík and the villages strung along the tunnel-linked main islands stay usable throughout. It thins out on the ridge walks, in the radio shadow behind the high fells, in tight valleys like Saksun and Gjógv, and on the outer islands such as Mykines and Kalsoy. Several of the older single-lane tunnels have no service from end to end. Save the map area and the forecast to the device before any hike, because that is exactly where you would want them.

Does a Denmark or Europe plan cover the Faroe Islands?+
Not automatically. The Faroe Islands are a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark but sit outside the European Union, and they are usually treated as their own coverage area rather than as part of Denmark or of a Europe bundle. Open the country list on the plan page before you buy and look for Faroe Islands by name; if it is not listed, assume it is not included rather than reading the word Europe as a promise.
Will I have signal on the ferry to the outer islands?+
Usually yes as you leave the pier and again as you approach the other side, but it drops in the middle where the boat is furthest from shore or running under high cliffs. Treat the crossing as offline time: buy or screenshot the ticket before boarding, and if someone is collecting you at the far harbour, agree the time and the meeting point while you still have service on land.
The sub-sea tunnels cut my signal — what should I prepare?+
Download the whole archipelago for offline use before you leave Tórshavn and set the route while you still have service, because offline navigation keeps guiding you when the data drops. Tolls on the big sub-sea tunnels are normally charged against the rental car's plate rather than paid at a booth, so there is nothing to do inside the tunnel — but ask the rental company on collection day exactly how they bill it back to you.
What if weather cancels my flight or ferry?+
It is a normal part of travel here. Leave at least one buffer day before your flight home and never schedule an outer-island trip for the last day.
