Before you buy for Iraq
Every Iraq eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.
Parts of Iraq are unstable. The network can be cut or fail without notice. Buy only if you must, keep a backup way to stay in touch, and note that we cannot refund a plan because the destination's network went down.
How much data you actually need
About 1–2GB a day for intercity maps, WhatsApp with drivers and checking route information as the day changes. If you join online meetings or upload work files every evening, budget nearer 3GB.
When you land
The main airports are Baghdad (BGW), Erbil (EBL), Sulaymaniyah (ISU), Basra (BSR) and Najaf (NJF), which handles heavy pilgrim traffic. Overland there is Ibrahim Khalil for Turkey in the north, Trebil for Jordan in the west, and the Iranian crossings at Mehran and Shalamcheh. Turn the line on before you leave the terminal, because the driver you arranged will confirm by message rather than by standing at arrivals.
Where coverage changes
The big cities — Baghdad, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Najaf, Karbala and Basra — and the main roads between them carry a usable signal throughout. It thins across the western desert of Anbar running out towards the Jordanian and Syrian borders, in the northern Kurdistan mountains near the Turkish and Iranian frontiers, and in the southern marshes of the Ahwar where you move by boat.

- Baghdad — Capital on the Tigris; moving around town means passing checkpoints.
- Erbil — Kurdistan's main city, laid out in rings around the ancient citadel.
- Sulaymaniyah — Highland city ringed by mountains, cooler than the southern plains.
- Najaf and Karbala — Pilgrimage cities; during major observances crowds slow the network right down.
- Basra — Southern port near the marshlands and the route out to the Gulf.

Does one plan cover both Kurdistan and Baghdad?+
It depends on which networks the plan attaches to. Administratively both are the same country, but the operator that performs well in the north is not necessarily the one that performs well in the centre, so quality can change as you cross between regions. Read the plan page before you buy, and if your itinerary covers both, keep a fallback in mind — hotel Wi-Fi, or a second line you can turn on if you need it.
What should I prepare before a long drive between cities?+
Download the route offline while you are still in the city, save the driver's and the hotel's numbers on the device, and keep copies of your travel documents on the phone, because there are checkpoints along the way where they may be asked for. Carry a power bank too: hours of continuous navigation drains a battery faster than most people expect. And tell whoever is expecting you roughly when you will arrive before you leave, not after.
Will data work during the big pilgrimage gatherings?+
It usually still works but slows noticeably, because during major observances Najaf and Karbala hold enormous numbers of people in the same few streets and the network carries many times its normal load. The practical answer is to agree a physical meeting point your group can find without a map, fix a time in advance, and save your accommodation address as a note on the phone in case messages will not send during the busiest hours.
When does a Iraq eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
