Before you buy for Maldives
Every Maldives eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.
How much data you actually need
Often 500MB–1GB a day because you sit on resort Wi-Fi much of the time; allow around 1.5GB if you video-call or go live from the boat and the beach.
When you land
Velana International (MLE), across the water from Malé, is the main gateway, with Gan (GAN) in the far south, Hanimaadhoo (HAQ) in the north and Maafaru (NMF) taking some direct flights. From Velana you continue by seaplane, domestic flight or speedboat. Have the line attached before you meet the resort desk in the arrivals hall.
Where coverage changes
Malé and Hulhumalé are covered island-wide, and most resort and local islands have service around the island itself. Crossings between atolls by speedboat or seaplane cut in and out, and liveaboards heading to outer atolls and open-water dive sites lose it for hours at a time.

Resorts have Wi-Fi — do I still need an eSIM?+
The moments Wi-Fi does not cover are the ones that matter: waiting at Velana, catching a boat or seaplane, moving between islands, and spending the day on a local island. If a flight is late and the resort needs to move your transfer, your own line handles it immediately. Resort Wi-Fi quality also varies by property and by how far your villa sits from the main building.
Do I need to file the traveller declaration before arrival?+
The Maldives asks travellers to complete an online declaration through the immigration IMUGA system before arrival and again before departure. Fill it in before you fly and save the QR code or confirmation page as a screenshot in case the arrivals hall signal is poor. If something needs a last-minute correction, having the eSIM already active lets you fix it at the counter.
Can I use data on a seaplane or speedboat transfer?+
On a seaplane you follow the crew's instruction to use airplane mode, and the flights are short anyway. On a speedboat the signal comes back near islands and drops in open water. Message whoever is meeting you before you leave the jetty, and download music or a film first, since some atoll crossings take more than an hour.
Will I be reachable on a multi-day liveaboard?+
Usually only in patches. The boat passes or moors near islands on some days, but at open-water dive sites there is generally nothing. Before you sail, tell family or the office when you will be out of contact, ask the captain how the boat handles emergency communication, and download everything you need in advance.
When does a Maldives eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
