Every Bhutan eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.
How much data you actually need
Around 500MB–1GB a day, since your guide handles the routing; allow about 1.5GB if you upload photos from Tiger's Nest or call home every evening.
When you land
Paro (PBH) is the only international airport, and because its approach depends on the weather, delays are common. Domestic strips serve Bumthang (BUT), Gelephu (GLU) and Yonphula (YON), while overland entry from India runs through Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar. Switch on as soon as you reach Paro so you can tell your guide if the flight has moved.
Where coverage changes
Thimphu, Paro and Punakha stay usable. Pass roads such as Dochu La and Chele La, the Phobjikha and Haa valleys and the long drives east to Trongsa and Bumthang lose service for stretches at a time, and multi-day treks such as Jomolhari have essentially none from start to finish.

How do the visa and the fee work for Bhutan?+
You apply through Bhutan's official online system and pay the Sustainable Development Fee for the nights of your stay along with the application. Most trips are arranged through a licensed operator, and travel beyond the main towns is done with a guide. Keep a copy of the visa and confirmation saved offline on the phone, because signal at some checkpoints is poor.
Can I reach my guide and driver through chat apps?+
Yes, and in practice that is how it is done: guides and drivers coordinate pickup times and the day's plan over internet chat apps. Add each other before you travel and send one test message, so that if your flight moves or a bag goes missing at Paro you can tell them straight away without depending on airport Wi-Fi.
Is there signal on the hike to Tiger's Nest?+
Not the whole way. Around the car park and the first half you usually have something, but along the cliff face and the stairway it drops in and out. Agree with your guide where and when you will meet before you start, take the photos and upload them on the way down, and keep an eye on battery — the climb takes hours and the cold drains it quickly.
When does a Bhutan eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
