What Marseille is like on a phone

Marseille pulls in two kinds of visitor at once: those catching a boat out to the islands or along the coast, and those here to walk the old quarters and eat seafood. It is not flat like Paris; it climbs and drops over limestone hills facing the sea, so one corner looks out over the whole bay and the next is blocked completely. In town service is good. What changes noticeably is going out to the rocky inlets beyond the city, where the hills stand between you and everything behind.

When you land

Marseille Provence (MRS) sits outside the city and connects by express coach or by train from the station nearby, while high-speed trains from Paris arrive at Saint-Charles, up on a rise above the centre. Switch the line on in the terminal, because you buy the coach ticket before boarding and the departures are reasonably far apart. The coach route cuts behind a few hills where the connection wobbles, then settles once you are inside the city.

Where coverage changes

The old port and the main streets running down to the water are smooth. In Le Panier, narrow lanes climbing the slope, the signal thins as you get in among the three- and four-storey houses. The basilica on the summit sees the whole city and does very well. The rocky inlets outside town are another matter: down at the bottom of one, rock surrounds you on every side and service can disappear entirely even though the city is only a few kilometres away.

What a day here costs in data

A day in town runs about 700MB to 1.2GB, mostly maps and checking boat or bus times that are not especially frequent. Island days use less while you are out, since there is rarely continuous service on the water, but almost everyone uploads the whole day's photos at once on getting back to the quay, which is heavy in a short burst. If you film from the boat with automatic backup on, turn it off and let it run on Wi-Fi later.

• Vieux-Port, the old harbour — Wide open and busy all day: service is good, though on a crowded evening along the quay a ride-hailing app takes longer to match you.
• Le Panier — Steep narrow lanes and a lot of steps throw your position off, so use the name of a small square as a meeting point rather than a coordinate.
• Notre-Dame de la Garde — The highest point in the city and one of the best connected — the place to push a panorama out before walking back down.
• The corniche and the beaches — The seafront road is open and reliable end to end, but the stairways down to little beaches tucked under the rock weaken as soon as you drop below road level.

Day trips out of the city

• The Calanques — On the ridge paths service is good because the sea is wide open in front of you; down at the bottom of an inlet, ringed by high rock, it goes entirely — tell someone your return time before you start.
• Aix-en-Provence — Bus or train between the two is short and connected the whole way; Aix itself has broad tree-lined streets, so even the old centre holds up well.
• Arles and the Camargue — The run to Arles keeps service, but out in the Camargue wetlands, where villages sit far apart, the signal starts thinning in stretches — load that area's map beforehand.
