How much data you actually need
About 500MB–1.5GB a day: heavier in Ulaanbaatar, lighter in the countryside where you are simply not connected for long parts of the day.
When you land
Chinggis Khaan International (UBN), about an hour outside Ulaanbaatar, is the main gateway. Many travellers instead arrive by rail — the Trans-Mongolian through Zamyn-Üüd from China or Sükhbaatar from Russia. Turn the line on before you leave the terminal, since getting into town means arranging a car in advance.
Where coverage changes
Ulaanbaatar and the larger towns are well covered, and the main highways and soum centres are usable. Out on the open steppe, in the Gobi, around Lake Khövsgöl and in the western Altai you can go hours with nothing at all. Some ger camps offer Wi-Fi, but ask when you book rather than assume it is there.

Is there any data out in the Gobi or on the steppe?+
In pockets, around soum centres and villages with a mast. On the drives between them, hours across open country, there is usually nothing. Before leaving Ulaanbaatar, download the whole route offline, save the coordinates of the camps you are heading to, and tell family or your operator when you expect to arrive, so someone always knows the plan.
Do ger camps have Wi-Fi and power?+
It depends on the camp. Some have Wi-Fi and sockets in the main building; others run on solar or a generator that is switched on for set hours. Ask what is available when you book, carry a high-capacity power bank and a car charger, and download whatever you want for the evening before you leave the city.
Should I arrange backup communication?+
If you are heading far west or deep into the Gobi, ask your operator whether the vehicle carries emergency communication equipment, and agree check-in windows for when you pass a town with service. For ordinary trips along the main routes, offline maps, a power bank and an agreed contact schedule are enough.
When does a Mongolia eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
