Any data use depends on the line an organisation arranges locally, and in practice it stays limited to messages and short emails, because the connection is intermittent and there are periods when nothing works at all.
The main gateway used to be Khartoum International (KRT) in the middle of the capital, but commercial aviation there was interrupted by the 2023 conflict and Port Sudan (PZU) on the Red Sea has served as the principal way in and out since. Overland there are crossings with Egypt at Wadi Halfa, with the ferry across Lake Nasser, and with Ethiopia and Chad, all of which open and close according to the situation.
The network has always followed the Nile and the big towns — Khartoum, Omdurman, Atbara, Dongola — and the Red Sea coast around Port Sudan. The Nubian desert in the north, the Bayuda desert and the wide reaches of Darfur in the west had very little even before. Since the conflict began, communications in many areas have also been cut for stretches at a time, so no plan should assume you can stay reachable through the day.

Not something to plan right now. Since 2023 many governments have advised against travel to Sudan altogether, and movement inside the country by road and by air has been badly disrupted. The desert sites sit a long way from any town with no service at all, so getting there depends entirely on local arrangements. Read your own government's current advice before you consider it, and treat any older trip report as out of date.
Follow the system of the organisation sending you: it will normally provide a local line, backup communications equipment and a fixed check-in schedule. Before you travel, save documents, maps and emergency contacts offline on the device, and agree with people at home that you may be unreachable for days at a time, because connectivity in many areas is cut for extended periods rather than merely being slow.
