Sudan eSIM
Sudan has no traveller eSIM service, and we do not list a plan for it. This was once the country you visited to stand alone in front of Nubian pyramids with no queue, but the internal conflict that began in 2023 changed everything about how people move: which flights operate, where you can enter, and how anyone stays in contact once inside. Those still going are mostly working with aid organisations. What follows is travel context only, not guidance on buying a plan.

How much data you actually need
Any data use depends on the line an organisation arranges locally, and in practice it stays limited to messages and short emails, because the connection is intermittent and there are periods when nothing works at all.
When you land
The main gateway used to be Khartoum International (KRT) in the middle of the capital, but commercial aviation there was interrupted by the 2023 conflict and Port Sudan (PZU) on the Red Sea has served as the principal way in and out since. Overland there are crossings with Egypt at Wadi Halfa, with the ferry across Lake Nasser, and with Ethiopia and Chad, all of which open and close according to the situation.
Where coverage changes
The network has always followed the Nile and the big towns — Khartoum, Omdurman, Atbara, Dongola — and the Red Sea coast around Port Sudan. The Nubian desert in the north, the Bayuda desert and the wide reaches of Darfur in the west had very little even before. Since the conflict began, communications in many areas have also been cut for stretches at a time, so no plan should assume you can stay reachable through the day.

- Omdurman — City across the river from Khartoum, home to the country's largest market.
- Port Sudan — Red Sea port and the principal way in and out in recent years.

Not at the moment. We do not list a plan for Sudan, because traveller roaming there is not normally available, and this page exists as travel context only. Is it still possible to visit the pyramids at Meroe?+
Not something to plan right now. Since 2023 many governments have advised against travel to Sudan altogether, and movement inside the country by road and by air has been badly disrupted. The desert sites sit a long way from any town with no service at all, so getting there depends entirely on local arrangements. Read your own government's current advice before you consider it, and treat any older trip report as out of date.
If I have to travel there for work, how should I plan communications?+
Follow the system of the organisation sending you: it will normally provide a local line, backup communications equipment and a fixed check-in schedule. Before you travel, save documents, maps and emergency contacts offline on the device, and agree with people at home that you may be unreachable for days at a time, because connectivity in many areas is cut for extended periods rather than merely being slow.
When does a Sudan eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
