Regional plan or country plans in Europe

Europe is the region where a regional plan most often beats country plans, because one Schengen visa lets Thai travellers cross many borders in a single trip and rail journeys move between countries in hours. Our supplier sells several Europe lists; when we checked on 10 October 2026 they ranged from 31 to 41 countries. They are not identical. One list labelled for 35 areas did not include France, most included the United Kingdom and Switzerland, and only some included Turkey or Ukraine.

So the step that matters is reading the country list against your route, especially for France, the UK, Switzerland, Turkey and the Balkans. A one-country trip, for example two weeks in Italy, can still be cheaper on the Italy plan. For a classic three- or four-country rail trip, a Europe plan saves buying and installing several eSIMs.

Entry basics for Thai passport holders in Europe

Entry rules below are for Thai ordinary passports. They are summaries of the official pages linked in each line; rules change without much notice, so confirm on the official site before you pay for flights.

• Schengen countries (most of the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland): Thai passport holders need a Schengen visa, and since the Entry/Exit System started, fingerprints and a face photo are taken at the first border crossing. https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees_en

Gotchas to know before a trip to Europe

• The Schengen area is not the same as the EU, and neither matches every eSIM list. The UK, Turkey and most Balkan countries outside the EU need checking twice: once for the visa, once for the plan.
• A UK visit needs a separate UK visa; a Schengen visa does not cover it.
• The Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a face photo at the first Schengen border, so the first arrival queue can be longer than on later crossings. Allow extra time for connections.
• Signal at sea is not covered by land networks. On ferries and cruises a phone may connect to a ship's satellite network, which is billed separately and can be expensive; switch off roaming to the ship network unless you mean to use it.
• Many European rail tickets and museum entries are mobile-only QR codes. Download them while you have signal; tunnels and rural lines drop coverage.
