Germany eSIM
Germany runs on train timetables more than most visitors expect. Deutsche Bahn connections change platform and time often, the live picture lives in the app rather than on the board, and most tickets are a code on your phone that staff scan on board. Having data that keeps working is less about entertainment than about not missing a connection.

What happens when your GB runs out
A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How much data you actually need
A normal trip uses about 700MB–1.5GB a day with the rail app and maps open all day. Add long-distance train journeys where you watch video and 2GB a day is a safer estimate.
When you land
The main airports are Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC) and Berlin Brandenburg (BER), followed by Düsseldorf (DUS), Hamburg (HAM), Cologne/Bonn (CGN) and Stuttgart (STR). Many people arrive by ICE from Amsterdam, Paris, Zurich or Vienna, normally without border checks inside Schengen. Have the line attached before you step off so you can check your onward platform immediately.
Where coverage changes
Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt are densely covered and reach many underground stations. The complaints concentrate on regional trains through the Rhine valley, the Black Forest, the Bavarian Forest and the Harz, plus secondary roads in the Eifel and Thuringia, where gaps run longer than visitors expect.
Cities travellers ask about
- Berlin — City-wide coverage including most U-Bahn stations.
- Munich — Heavy rail-app use on day trips towards the Alps.
- Frankfurt — Air and rail interchange hub with strong signal.
- Hamburg — Steady around the harbour district and on the S-Bahn.
- Cologne — Good in the city, patchy on trains along the Rhine.
Read it city by city: Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg
Apps to install before you fly
- DB Navigator for train tickets, platforms and live connections
- The city transport app, such as BVG in Berlin or MVGO in Munich
- FreeNow or Uber for taxis in the larger cities
- Google Maps for walking and finding the right exit at big stations

FAQ
Will my phone ticket work when there is no signal?+
Yes, provided you opened it in the app or saved it as a file while you still had signal. The usual failure is opening the app for the first time exactly when the conductor arrives and the train happens to be in a tunnel or a valley. Load the ticket fully while you are still on the platform and keep a screenshot as a second copy.
Should I buy the monthly nationwide transport pass?+
It depends on how much regional rail and city transport you actually use. If you are moving between cities and riding public transport daily, the monthly option sold inside the Deutsche Bahn app usually beats single tickets. If your trip is mostly long-distance high-speed trains, that pass does not cover them, so read the conditions in the app before deciding.
Can I pay by card everywhere in Germany yet?+
Not everywhere. Small restaurants, bakeries, market stalls and some cafés still take cash only, or only domestic debit cards. Carry a reasonable amount of euro cash, especially outside the big cities, and check the sign at the door before ordering. For train tickets and larger shops, card or phone payment works normally.
When does a Germany eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
