How much data you actually need
About 1–2GB a day for maps, chat and photos. On long driving days with navigation running for hours, or with music streaming the whole way, budget above that and download the route before you leave town.
When you land
The main gateways are Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), Perth (PER) and Cairns (CNS). Switch the eSIM on when you land so you can order a ride or check the city train immediately, and message the rental desk about your pickup time while you are still inside the terminal.

How should I prepare for signal when driving the outback?+
Assume there is no service for the whole leg. Download the offline map for the entire route, save your accommodation address and phone number to the device, tell someone when you expect to arrive, and do not build the plan around being able to call from the road, because coverage typically returns only in towns or at the larger roadhouses.
Does an Australia plan also cover New Zealand?+
Not always, because the two countries count as separate coverage areas. If your itinerary continues across the Tasman, check the country list on the plan page before buying, or take a plan that names both, so you are not installing a second profile the moment you land in Auckland.
Is there signal on a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef?+
Near the harbour and along the coast it usually still works, but as the boat heads out to the outer reef the signal fades with distance. Download your booking confirmation and tour details before boarding, tell anyone waiting that you will be reachable again in the evening, and do not schedule a payment or an online meeting while you are out on the water.
When does a Australia eSIM start counting days?+

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
