Work out how many GB this trip needs

Most travellers buy too much data because they are afraid of running out mid-trip, and then pay for gigabytes that expire untouched. This tool looks for the middle.

8 GB

About 0.9 GB a day over 7 days, plus 15% headroom for the heavier days.

This is an estimate from typical usage patterns, not a measurement of your phone. For a real number, check the data usage stats from your last trip.

How the number is worked out

Four baseline daily levels are combined with the habits you tick — maps open most of the day, video every evening, hotspot shared with a travel partner — then multiplied by your days with 15% headroom for the heavier days.

  • Navigation costs around 150MB a day in bursts
  • Video at 1080p costs roughly 1.8GB an hour — more than everything else combined
  • Automatic photo backup is the usage people forget to count

If you want a number from your own usage

Open your phone's data usage screen, reset the counter before your next trip and read it when you get home. That figure beats any average, including ours.

This tool runs fixed formulas over the numbers you enter. No plan price is wired into the result, and the answer does not shift with what we earn.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy less and top up later?+

Only on plans marked as top-up capable, which the plan page states outright. If a plan cannot be topped up you can still buy another and install it as a second profile.

Does an unlimited plan remove the question?+

It removes the guessing, but nearly every unlimited plan has a daily full-speed ceiling and throttles after it. The question becomes whether that daily ceiling fits your day.

Why does the result add 15%?+

Real trips have days that go off plan: navigation all day, a long video call home, hotel Wi-Fi that does not work. A small buffer is cheaper than fixing it when the data runs out.
