New Caledonia is a French territory in the South Pacific where French is the working language and prices are in Pacific francs (XPF). A normal trip splits in two: Noumea, with its restaurants and a real bus network, and the trip out to the Isle of Pines or the Loyalty Islands, which depends on ferries and small domestic flights booked ahead. Data matters most for holding those bookings and watching timetables that move with the weather.

A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

About 500MB to 1GB a day for maps, translating French menus and signs, and messaging. Add a little more if you are checking ferry and domestic flight timetables several times a day.
The international gateway is La Tontouta (NOU), a bit over forty kilometres from Noumea, so you continue by shuttle bus or a booked transfer. Domestic island flights leave from Noumea Magenta (GEA) inside the city. Turn the line on at the gate to confirm your transfer and accommodation, since the airport run takes about an hour.
Noumea and its suburbs are well served, from Anse Vata along the waterfront to the business district. It thins along the central mountain spine of Grande Terre, on the east coast around Hienghene, through the northern province, and on the boat legs out to the Isle of Pines and Lifou. Assume time on the ferry is time without service.

Manageable, but prepare for it. English works at hotels and on the main tours, yet signs, menus and ferry or bus timetables are mostly in French. Download the French pack in a translation app for offline use, and save your accommodation address in French to show a driver.
Book before you fly. Domestic flights and ferries both have limited seats and fill quickly around holidays, and ferry schedules are adjusted for sea conditions. Leave a spare day before your international departure and check the sailing status on the morning of travel every time.
In Noumea the Taneo buses and walking are enough. Once you head up either coast of Grande Terre, public transport is sparse and the distances are long, so most visitors rent a car. Download offline maps first, because some of the mountain crossings have no service at all.
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
