When you land
The international gateway is La Tontouta (NOU), a bit over forty kilometres from Noumea, so you continue by shuttle bus or a booked transfer. Domestic island flights leave from Noumea Magenta (GEA) inside the city. Turn the line on at the gate to confirm your transfer and accommodation, since the airport run takes about an hour.
Where coverage changes
Noumea and its suburbs are well served, from Anse Vata along the waterfront to the business district. It thins along the central mountain spine of Grande Terre, on the east coast around Hienghene, through the northern province, and on the boat legs out to the Isle of Pines and Lifou. Assume time on the ferry is time without service.

Do I need a rental car outside Noumea?+
In Noumea the Taneo buses and walking are enough. Once you head up either coast of Grande Terre, public transport is sparse and the distances are long, so most visitors rent a car. Download offline maps first, because some of the mountain crossings have no service at all.
When does a New Caledonia eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
