New Zealand
- Hotspot
New Zealand is a driving trip, whether in a rental car or a campervan, and a single day can cross cities, sheep country, a mountain pass and long empty stretches of coast. Before you fly there is the NZ Traveller Declaration to file online, and accommodation, campsites and the Cook Strait ferry are all booked through apps. Coverage here is less about having signal everywhere than about knowing which stretches will not have it.

A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

Most visitors use about 1–2GB a day, since maps run for the whole drive and you check weather and road conditions often. If you upload video clips every night, budget nearer 3GB a day.
The main gateways are Auckland (AKL), Christchurch (CHC) and Wellington (WLG), while travellers heading straight for the lower South Island often fly into Queenstown (ZQN) or Dunedin (DUD). Crossing between the islands means the Cook Strait ferry between Wellington and Picton, around three and a half hours. Complete the NZ Traveller Declaration before you board your flight.
Coverage is good in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and along the main highways. It disappears for long stretches on the Milford Road through the Homer Tunnel, across Fiordland, over Haast Pass, along the West Coast, on the Desert Road in the North Island, through the Catlins and on Stewart Island. Great Walks such as the Routeburn and the Milford Track have essentially none.

Hours rather than minutes. The run from Te Anau into Milford Sound, Haast Pass down to the West Coast and the road through the Catlins can each go over an hour with nothing. Download both islands offline beforehand, bring a car charger, and tell your next accommodation roughly when you expect to arrive, because you will not be able to reach anyone on the way.
Assume no signal for the entire route. Department of Conservation huts must be booked in advance, so save the confirmation offline. Before setting out, leave your intentions with someone you trust including the day you expect to walk out; many people also carry a hired emergency beacon, and keeping the phone in flight mode saves battery for photos.
There is service leaving port and again as you approach the other side, but it drops out in the middle of the strait. The crossing takes about three and a half hours, so check in and sort out any onward car or accommodation booking before you board. Save the ferry ticket as an image, and book ahead — especially if you are taking a rental car or campervan across.
Many campsites sit outside town and their Wi-Fi is either sold by the hour or non-existent, so campervan travellers usually lean on mobile data and tether inside the van. Allow extra data if several people share it, download maps and anything you want to watch during your last stop in a town, and keep a power bank for nights parked without a power hookup.
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
