Hours rather than minutes. The run from Te Anau into Milford Sound, Haast Pass down to the West Coast and the road through the Catlins can each go over an hour with nothing. Download both islands offline beforehand, bring a car charger, and tell your next accommodation roughly when you expect to arrive, because you will not be able to reach anyone on the way.
How should I plan for communications on a Great Walk?+
Assume no signal for the entire route. Department of Conservation huts must be booked in advance, so save the confirmation offline. Before setting out, leave your intentions with someone you trust including the day you expect to walk out; many people also carry a hired emergency beacon, and keeping the phone in flight mode saves battery for photos.
Is there signal on the Cook Strait ferry?+
There is service leaving port and again as you approach the other side, but it drops out in the middle of the strait. The crossing takes about three and a half hours, so check in and sort out any onward car or accommodation booking before you board. Save the ferry ticket as an image, and book ahead — especially if you are taking a rental car or campervan across.
