Belgium eSIM
Belgium is a small country you cross by train, so a normal trip becomes a series of day returns between Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp. Rail and city transport tickets mostly live in apps as QR codes, and signage switches between Dutch and French as you move between regions. Data goes on platform checks, ticket screens and translation all day.

What happens when your GB runs out
A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How much data you actually need
A typical Belgium trip runs about 500MB–1.5GB a day, mostly maps, the rail app and photos. If you upload video or go live each evening, budget closer to 2GB a day.
When you land
The main gateway is Brussels Airport (BRU) at Zaventem, with Brussels South Charleroi (CRL) used by low-cost carriers, plus Antwerp (ANR), Liège (LGG) and Ostend-Bruges (OST). Many people instead arrive by high-speed train from London, Paris or Amsterdam into Brussels-Midi/Zuid, so switch the eSIM line on before you step off.
Where coverage changes
For its size Belgium is very densely built out, and Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges are covered throughout, including most of the metro and tram network. What genuinely thins is the Ardennes forest in south-eastern Wallonia, the Hautes Fagnes plateau, and tunnel or cutting sections on a few rail lines.
Cities travellers ask about
- Brussels — Covered city-wide, including the metro and Midi station.
- Bruges — An all-walking old town where you keep the map open in the lanes.
- Ghent — A student city run on trams, so you check live times often.
- Antwerp — Strong around Centraal and the diamond quarter, tram tunnels included.
- Liège — The gateway to the Ardennes; signal thins once you leave town.
Read it city by city: Brussels, Bruges
Apps to install before you fly
- SNCB/NMBS for intercity train tickets
- STIB/MIVB for Brussels metro, tram and bus
- De Lijn for buses in Flanders and TEC in Wallonia
- Google Maps for connections and walking routes

FAQ
Will a Belgium plan work on the train to Paris or Amsterdam?+
It depends whether you bought a Belgium-only plan or a multi-country Europe plan. On a single-country plan, data stops the moment the train crosses into France or the Netherlands. If cross-border rail is already part of the itinerary, a regional Europe plan is the simpler and usually cheaper choice, and you never have to swap lines mid-journey. The country list is on each plan page before you buy.
Do I need data right at the airport?+
It helps a lot. The airport train into Brussels is easiest to book in the app, and the ticket is a QR code you need to open at the platform. From Charleroi it matters more, because you connect by coach into Brussels and the timetable shifts with flight arrivals. Turn the eSIM on once you land and you will usually have service before you leave the terminal.
Signs and announcements keep changing language — how do I cope?+
Belgium has Dutch, French and German language regions, so the same city has two names — Bergen and Mons, or Luik and Liège — which is genuinely confusing on a departure board. The easiest fix is to track the train number and departure time rather than the destination name, and keep a camera translation tool for station signs. That uses a fair amount of data unless you download the offline language pack first.
Can one line hotspot the rest of the group?+
Technically yes, provided the plan does not disable sharing, but walking a compact old town like Bruges or Ghent means the group drifts apart constantly. Past twenty or thirty metres the hotspot drops and whoever depends on it loses navigation instantly. For three or more people who split up often, a small plan each is safer, and the person sharing keeps their battery through the day.
When does a Belgium eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
