What Bruges is like on a phone

Bruges is a small town most people visit as a day trip from Brussels, or stay one night in so they can walk it early before the coaches arrive. The historic core is ringed by canals and can be covered on foot in a day, so you barely touch public transport at all. The network here is not complicated: it is a small town with no metro. The only thing that changes the signal is the thick brick of the medieval buildings and the tower people climb for the view.

Most people arrive by train from Brussels or Ghent at Bruges station, which sits outside the canal ring with a walk or a bus of about fifteen minutes into the centre. Those flying in generally land at Brussels Airport and take the train on. Switch the line on at the airport or on board, because at the station you immediately have to choose between walking and the bus, and the stops are on the far side of the forecourt. The rail journey keeps service throughout, crossing open flat country nearly the whole way.

The old town and the outer districts are connected throughout, since the buildings are low and there is plenty of open ground.
