Ukraine eSIM
Travelling to Ukraine is not like travelling elsewhere in Europe right now. Civil airspace is closed and there are no commercial flights, so everyone arrives overland or by train from a neighbouring country, and most people making the trip are journalists, aid staff or visiting family rather than tourists. Read your government's travel advice before committing to anything. In these conditions a connection is not a convenience: it is how you receive air raid alerts and how the people who need to know where you are can reach you.

Before you buy for Ukraine
Ukraine is at war. The network can be cut or fail without notice. Buy only if you must, keep a backup way to stay in touch, and note that we cannot refund a plan because the destination's network went down.
What happens when your GB runs out
A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How much data you actually need
Around 1–2GB a day, because alert apps stay running, maps are open and you check in with people regularly. If you are sending photos or video files back, budget well above that.
When you land
There are no commercial flights, so Boryspil (KBP) and Lviv (LWO) are not receiving passengers. People cross by land instead: Shehyni and Krakovets from Poland, Uzhhorod from Slovakia, Chop from Hungary, and the crossings with Romania and Moldova. The other common route is the international train from Przemyśl in Poland through to Lviv and Kyiv. Have a working line before you reach the frontier, because waits at the border can run long and plans change while you are in the queue.
Where coverage changes
Networks are working in the western and central cities such as Lviv, Uzhhorod and Kyiv, but quality depends above all on the electricity situation. During wide outages, masts run on batteries or generators and service can become limited or drop entirely for a while; operators have at times opened their networks to one another so a phone can attach to whichever is still up. Areas near the front line and occupied territory carry severe safety and access restrictions and should not be treated as somewhere you plan a route through.
Cities travellers ask about
- Kyiv — Networks operating, though quality follows the power situation.
- Lviv — Western hub and terminus for trains from Poland.
- Uzhhorod — Border city next to the Slovak crossing.
- Chernivtsi — In the south-west, near the Romanian crossings.
- Ivano-Frankivsk — Gateway to the western Carpathian mountains.
Apps to install before you fly
- The Air Alert raid warning app, left running at all times
- Kyiv Digital for alerts and city services in Kyiv
- Ukrzaliznytsia for rail tickets and timetables
- Google Maps with your route saved offline in advance

FAQ
How do I reach Ukraine when there are no flights?+
Everyone arrives overland: across a border crossing from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, or on the international train from Przemyśl in Poland to Lviv and Kyiv. Train seats sell out and need booking ahead, and the border process itself can take hours. Have a working line before you reach the frontier, and check your government's travel advice again on the day you set out rather than relying on what it said last month.
Does mobile data still work during power outages?+
It works, but not dependably. Many masts have battery backup and generators, yet during a long outage speeds fall and some areas drop out for a while. Carry a high-capacity power bank and charge everything whenever the power is on, keep maps and important documents saved offline, and agree in advance with people at home how many hours of silence is normal so that a blackout is not read as an emergency.
Do air raid alert apps need an internet connection?+
Yes — the warnings are delivered over the internet, so keep data on around the clock, including overnight. Set the app to alert with sound and to override do-not-disturb, and do not switch the line off to save data. Treat the app as one layer only: also listen for local sirens and follow whatever your accommodation or local authorities tell you, since they know the shelter arrangements for that specific building and street.
What are the rules on photographing and posting while in Ukraine?+
Photographing military objects, air defence positions, checkpoints and the aftermath of strikes is restricted by law, and posting your location in real time can put other people at risk. Turn off location tagging in your camera, avoid going live from an incident site, and ask an official or a local first whenever you are unsure. A camera raised in the wrong place at the wrong moment creates problems for you and for everyone standing nearby.
When does a Ukraine eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
