How much data you actually need
Around 1–2GB a day driving the island, with navigation running and road and weather checks several times a day. Heavy video shooting takes it to about 2.5GB.
When you land
Keflavík (KEF) is the main international airport, about forty-five minutes by road from Reykjavík, while Reykjavík city airport (RKV) handles domestic and Greenland flights. Akureyri (AEY) in the north and Egilsstaðir (EGS) in the east take some flights too. The other way in is the Norröna ferry into Seyðisfjörður. Turn the eSIM on before you collect the hire car.

Route 1, the Ring Road, has service for most of its length but with gaps, particularly across the southern sand plains and in the eastern fjords. What genuinely has nothing is the interior highlands and every F-road, including Landmannalaugar and Askja, the glacier areas, and parts of the Westfjords where the road winds between mountains. Assume that off Route 1 you may have no data at all.

FAQ
Is there signal all the way round the Ring Road?+
Almost, but not entirely — there are gaps of ten kilometres or more, especially across the southern sand plains, in the eastern fjords and on the high crossings between towns. Download offline maps for the whole island before leaving Keflavík, set the day's route while you still have signal, and check road status and the wind forecast every morning, because once you are out there you may not get another chance until the next town.
What should I prepare for the highlands and F-roads?+
Assume no signal for the entire route. Leave a travel plan with SafeTravel before you go, tell your destination accommodation roughly when you expect to arrive, and carry water, food and warm layers in case you spend a night in the car. Remember that hire insurance forbids two-wheel-drive cars on F-roads. If something happens without data, the 112 app can still send coordinates by SMS in areas that hold a voice signal.
Can I hotspot the other driver in the car?+
Yes if the plan allows sharing, and inside one car it works well because everyone is close together. Bear in mind the sharing phone runs hot and drains fast, especially clamped to a sun-facing windscreen mount. Keep it on the charger and where air can reach it. If you split into two cars, each needs its own line — the distance on the road is far beyond hotspot range.
When does a Iceland eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
