What Akureyri is like on a phone

Akureyri is the main town of the north — far smaller than the capital but with everything a traveller needs — set at the head of a long fjord with mountains clearly on either side. The people who come are ring-road drivers at their halfway point, whale watchers working the northern waters, and skiers in winter. Along the main streets the line is good, but fjord terrain means the far side of a rise can change the terms at once.

When you land

Akureyri Airport (AEY) is a few minutes from the centre and handles mostly domestic flights. Many people arrive instead by hire car along the ring road or by long-distance coach into the middle of town, and in summer cruise ships berth right beside the centre. Switch the eSIM on before leaving the aircraft, or at your last stop before town. The final descent to the head of the fjord alternates between weak patches and places where it comes back fully.

Where coverage changes

Along the main streets and the residential terraces on the slope the line is good. Drive out around the fjord or over the pass to the east, though, and long stretches go very weak, with ridges in the way and nothing built along them. The mountain tunnels on the roads out are silent end to end. Some mountain roads close in winter and their status changes day to day, so always check official notices before setting out. A long cold season also drains batteries faster than planned.

What a day here costs in data

A town day is light, roughly 400MB to 900MB, since it is small and walkable. Driving around the fjord or going out to watch whales is different: maps run the whole time and people shoot long video, then upload it in one go on return. Allow about 1.5GB for a driving day, and assume all the uploading happens once you are back in town.

• The centre by the harbour — Shops, kitchens and the quay within a few blocks; the line is steady, and this is where to sort maps and bookings before driving out.
• The slope around Akureyrarkirkja — Steps climb to the church on the rise with the whole fjord laid out below; the top is open and works well, while the narrow streets behind the rise are a little weaker.
• The botanical garden and the streets south of it — A quiet stretch of garden and houses with the line covering it throughout, and a good place for a longer stay since the centre is ten minutes on foot.
• Hlíðarfjall — The ski area on the mountain above town, a short drive up; the base area and car park work, while runs on the back side of the hill thin out noticeably.

Day trips out of the city

• Lake Mývatn — About an hour east across upland and geothermal ground, with long very weak stretches; download the route offline before leaving town and plan your return time without depending on a connection en route.
• Húsavík and going out for whales — A northern harbour town about an hour away; once the boat leaves the bay the line fades quickly. Sailings depend on the season and the sea state and are revised from year to year, so check with the operator before building a whole day around one.
• The Troll Peninsula and the mountain roads west — Coast roads and several mountain tunnels with nothing inside them; some routes close in winter and the status changes daily, so check official notices before you leave. Always download offline maps, and understand that emergency calling does not behave like data — follow official services on that.
