How much data you actually need
About 600MB to 1.5GB a day for maps, bus timetables, messaging and photos. If you are driving across the mountains with navigation running all day, plan for the upper end of that.
When you land
Sarajevo (SJJ) is the main airport, with Tuzla (TZL), Mostar (OMO) and Banja Luka (BNX) taking smaller traffic. In practice the busiest way in is the bus from Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb or Belgrade, so make sure the line is attached before you reach the border post rather than after the stamp.
Where coverage changes
Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka and the valley towns are usable throughout. It thins on the mountain road between Sarajevo and Mostar, in Sutjeska and Una national parks, and on rafting stretches of the Neretva and Tara rivers. Near the Croatian border a phone will sometimes switch itself onto a network on the other side.

FAQ
Does a plan bought for Croatia also cover Bosnia?+
Not automatically. Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the European Union and is often excluded from Europe-branded bundles, so open the country list and look for it by name before buying. This matters especially if you plan to drive through the Neum strip or take a day trip across to Mostar.
Why does my phone jump to another country's network near the border?+
Because a mast on the neighbouring side can simply be stronger at that spot, and the phone picks whichever network reads strongest. The fix is to open network selection, switch it from automatic to manual and choose an operator in the country you are actually standing in. The alternative is to use a plan that covers both countries in the first place.
What should I prepare for bus travel in Bosnia?+
Book or check timetables while you are still in a town with good coverage, because the mountain legs go quiet for long stretches. Save the ticket and your accommodation address offline, download the whole route in maps, and leave slack in the schedule, since border crossings can take longer than the timetable suggests.
When does a Bosnia and Herzegovina eSIM start counting days?+
