Hungary eSIM
Hungary eats more data than people expect, because getting around Budapest means switching between metro, tram and bus all day, and tickets have largely moved into apps. Booking a thermal bath slot, a Danube cruise or a table in the old quarter is all done from your phone while you are already out, not the night before.

What happens when your GB runs out
A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How much data you actually need
Around 800MB to 1.5GB a day covers maps, in-app transport tickets, messaging and photos. If you film along the Danube and upload every evening, budget closer to 2GB a day.
When you land
Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD) is the main gateway, with Debrecen (DEB) serving the east. A lot of people arrive instead by train from Vienna or Bratislava into Keleti station. Get the line attached while still at the airport, since the 100E airport bus needs a ticket bought before you board.
Where coverage changes
Budapest is covered throughout, including the main metro lines, and the larger regional cities like Debrecen, Szeged and Pecs are fine. It thins over the Hortobagy grasslands and the eastern Great Plain, in the Bukk and Matra hills, and disappears entirely underground in the Aggtelek caves.
Cities travellers ask about
- Budapest — Transport tickets are bought in the app, so you need data each time you board.
- Debrecen — The big eastern city and the usual base for the Hortobagy plains.
- Szeged — On the Tisza near the Serbian border, where phones sometimes latch onto the other side.
- Eger — Wine town below the Matra; solid in the centre, weaker on the hill roads.
- Lake Balaton — Balatonfured and the north shore get crowded in summer, so evenings can feel slower.
Read it city by city: Budapest
Apps to install before you fly
- BudapestGO, the official BKK app for city tickets and routes
- The MAV app for intercity rail tickets

FAQ
Does mobile data actually work in the Budapest metro?+
Yes on the platforms and inside stations on the main lines, though it can stutter briefly while the train is running through a tunnel. The safe habit is to buy and activate your BudapestGO ticket above ground before you head down the stairs, since validating one needs a connection at that moment.
Do I need to book the thermal baths from my phone?+
In summer and over long weekends the queues at the well-known baths such as Szechenyi and Gellert get long, and booking a same-day slot online genuinely saves time. That means you need working data while you are out in the city rather than waiting until you are back at the hotel to reserve.
Is Hungary still on the forint, and does paying need data?+
Hungary uses the forint, not the euro. Cards are widely accepted in the cities, but if you pay through a phone wallet or have to approve the transaction in your Thai banking app, that confirmation step needs an internet connection. Keep working data on you rather than relying on finding Wi-Fi at the till.
When does a Hungary eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
