Netherlands eSIM
The Netherlands runs on a phone at nearly every step: train tickets, checking in and out of public transport, museum slots and paying in shops all happen on screen. Cities are so close together that many people base themselves in one place and ride out to others for the day, which means checking times and platforms several times over.

What happens when your GB runs out
A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How much data you actually need
A typical trip uses about 700MB–1.4GB a day with the rail app and maps open throughout. Add a little more if you cycle rural routes with turn-by-turn navigation running.
When you land
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the main gateway and has a railway station directly under the terminal, with Eindhoven (EIN), Rotterdam The Hague (RTM) and Maastricht (MST) taking European routes. High-speed trains arrive from Paris and Brussels and ICE services from Germany, while North Sea ferries from England dock at IJmuiden and Hook of Holland.
Where coverage changes
The Randstad — Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht — is the most densely covered part of the country, and intercity trains stay connected for almost the whole run. It thins on the Wadden islands such as Texel, Terschelling and Ameland, during the ferry crossings to them, and across the open polder country of Friesland and Zeeland.
Cities travellers ask about
- Amsterdam — City-wide, including the underground metro stations.
- Rotterdam — Steady across the port district and the bridges.
- The Hague — Good in the city and out at Scheveningen beach.
- Utrecht — The busiest rail junction; you check platforms often.
- Texel — Fine in the villages, thinner on dunes and beaches.
Read it city by city: Amsterdam, Rotterdam
Apps to install before you fly
- The NS app for train tickets, platforms and live connections
- 9292 for journey planning across train, tram and bus
- Uber or Bolt for rides in Amsterdam and Rotterdam
- Google Maps for cycle routes separated from car traffic

FAQ
Do I really have to tap in and out on Dutch trains?+
Yes. Dutch transport charges by distance, so you tap at a post or gate both when boarding and when you get off; forgetting to tap out means being charged for the full line. Contactless credit and debit cards now work directly at the readers. Use the same card or device for both taps on a journey, or the system cannot match them up.
How safe is renting a bike to get around?+
It is safe and it is how locals move, but you need a feel for the rhythm first. Cycle lanes are real lanes with their own signals, locals ride fast and dislike people stopping mid-lane, so pull over before looking at a map. Use two locks whenever you park, and drop a pin where you left it — the garages under the big stations hold thousands of bikes.
Do museums need to be booked in advance?+
The popular Amsterdam museums sell timed slots and often fill days ahead, especially in summer and over holidays. Book online before you travel and save the code to your device, because the entrance area gets crowded enough to slow a web page down. If you are visiting several, check whether a combined museum card still requires you to reserve a time slot separately.
When does a Netherlands eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
