How much data you actually need

When you land
Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) is the main gateway, followed by Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT), while people heading north usually connect on to Luleå (LLA) or Kiruna (KRN). By land, trains cross the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen straight into Malmö, and overnight ferries arrive in Stockholm from Helsinki, Turku and Tallinn.
Where coverage changes
The southern half, the E4 corridor and the big cities — Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö — are well covered, including nearly every station on the Stockholm metro. It thins across inland Norrland, on the Kungsleden hiking trail, in the mountains around Abisko, on the outer islands of the Stockholm archipelago and along long forest roads up north. Out on the Baltic, ships often fall back to satellite roaming that is very expensive.

Do I need cash in Sweden?+
Barely. Shops, museums and much of public transport are card-only, and some refuse cash entirely; a foreign contactless card works normally. Swish, the transfer app locals use, needs a Swedish bank account and national e-identification, so visitors cannot sign up for it. Rely on the card and keep data available for the bank's verification prompts.
What is the signal like up at Abisko for the aurora?+
Abisko village and the station area work, but walking into the national park or riding up to the viewpoint thins it out, with some spots dropping entirely. The bigger issue is temperature: at minus ten to minus twenty the battery empties unusually fast. Keep the phone in an inside pocket, carry a power bank, and download maps and the forecast before you leave the lodge.
Can I use data on the overnight ferry to Helsinki?+
Close to shore the ship still uses land towers, but out in the Baltic many vessels switch to satellite service, which is billed separately and is very expensive. The safe move is to turn data roaming off before you leave the quay and use the ship's wi-fi if you need something, then switch back on as you approach Finnish waters — remembering that Finland is a separate country on a plan's list.
When does a Sweden eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
