What Stockholm is like on a phone

Stockholm is spread over islands joined by bridges, so moving around town means crossing water repeatedly without really noticing. The visitors are museum and design people, business travellers and families planning a boat out into the archipelago. In the city the phone is comfortable, indoors and out. What is particular here is that many metro stations are blasted into solid rock and sit deep, which is a different proposition from the shallow stations you may be used to.

When you land

Arlanda (ARN) lies to the north, with the fast airport train at about twenty minutes, cheaper but slower commuter trains, and airport coaches. Bromma (BMA) is closer in and mostly handles domestic flights. A lot of people also arrive on the overnight ships from Helsinki and Tallinn at Värtahamnen or Stadsgården. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft or before the ship berths, because city transport tickets are mainly bought in the app. The train in stays connected almost the whole way.

Where coverage changes

Above ground the city is good throughout, and the bridges between islands are the most open places of all. The rock-cut metro has stations that go very deep, and the stretches between them in stone tunnel usually go quiet. Take a boat out into the archipelago and the line fades with distance from shore: inner islands still work around the jetties, outer ones only in places. The pine forest around the city and the trails in the nature reserves have gaps too, and a sub-zero winter pulls the battery down much faster than usual.

What a day here costs in data

A Stockholm day is usually about 800MB to 1.6GB, since the transport app gets opened constantly to decide between metro, bus and ferry. The rest is maps, museum tickets and a lot of photographs across water. An archipelago day actually uses less data, because there is less to use, but more battery, because the phone keeps hunting — always carry a spare.

Districts travellers ask about

• Gamla Stan — The old town on its own island, with the tightest lanes in Stockholm; positions can wander tens of metres, so meet at a named shop rather than a pin.
• Södermalm — The big southern island with cliffs looking back over the city; the clifftop viewpoints are wide open, while the streets tucked underneath the rock are noticeably worse.
• Djurgården — The island of museums and parkland you can walk or cycle all day; open ground keeps it working, though inside some of the larger exhibition halls it weakens.
• Östermalm — Wide streets and heavy stone buildings, with the famous covered market; outdoors it is steady, while inner rooms behind thick walls are weaker than you would guess.

Day trips out of the city

• Drottningholm Palace — Reachable by metro plus bus or by boat from the centre; the lake crossing stays near land so it mostly works, while inside the palace the thick walls take it down.
• The archipelago: Vaxholm and Sandhamn — The further out you go the thinner it gets, and on some islands there is only service near the jetty. Download maps and your boat ticket offline before setting off. Sailings shift with the season and are revised from year to year, so always check the operator's own timetable before you build a plan on one.
• Uppsala — Forty minutes north by train through alternating fields and forest, with the usual short dips; at the far end the town works evenly around the cathedral and the university.
