How much data you actually need
Reckon on roughly 1–1.5GB a day for maps, messaging and photos. If Naver Map stays open all day, you watch clips on the subway and video-call home each night, budget nearer 2–2.5GB a day.
When you land
The main gateways are Incheon (ICN) and Gimpo (GMP) for Seoul, plus Gimhae in Busan (PUS), Jeju (CJU) and Daegu (TAE). The northern land border is closed entirely, so the only surface alternative is the international ferry terminal in Busan with sailings to and from Japan.
Where coverage changes
Seoul, Busan, Daegu and the other big cities are covered end to end, including subway platforms and tunnels. KTX trains stay connected but drop through the longer tunnels. Signal genuinely thins in the mountain national parks such as Seoraksan and Jirisan, along Jeju's coastal Olle walking trails, and on far islands like Ulleungdo.

- Busan — Solid around Haeundae beach, Jagalchi market and Gamcheon village.

Why does Google Maps navigation not work properly in Korea?+
Korean law restricts high-resolution mapping data from being stored on overseas servers, so foreign map apps can only show partial walking and driving routes. The simple fix is to install Naver Map or KakaoMap before you fly. Both have English interfaces and give far more accurate subway transfer directions than the alternatives.
Does data work the whole way on a KTX train?+
Almost the whole way. Main lines such as Seoul to Busan run mostly through built-up areas and flat country, but the longer tunnel sections cut out for short stretches. If you have an online meeting or want video on board, download the files and an offline map before you board.
Do some Korean apps require a local phone number?+
Yes. Several domestic delivery and payment apps verify you with a Korean mobile number, which short-stay visitors rarely have. The ones you actually need — Naver Map, KakaoMap and Papago — work without any verification, and Kakao T will still hail a taxi that you pay in cash at the end of the ride.
When should I switch the eSIM line on at Incheon?+
Install the profile while you are still on Wi-Fi at home, then turn the line on after landing once you leave flight mode. It normally attaches before you reach immigration, so you can book an AREX seat, call a car or message your accommodation the moment you walk out of the terminal.
When does a South Korea eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
