What Rome is like on a phone

Rome holds three kinds of traveller at once: the first-timer working through the Colosseum and the Vatican, the person staying one night before a train south, and the cruise passenger ashore for a single day. Coverage across the city is broadly even, but what actually changes the experience is the crowd and the old stone standing between your phone and the nearest mast. When you land

Most people land at Fiumicino (FCO); some low-cost flights use Ciampino (CIA), and cruise passengers come ashore at Civitavecchia up the coast. • Centro Storico — The Pantheon and Piazza Navona are easy to walk but dense with people, and in the early evening speeds drop simply because an entire square is uploading at once.
• Trastevere — Narrow cobbled lanes with high walls on both sides make the map pin jump, so it pays to navigate by the name of a square or a bridge as well as by the dot.
• Monti — Close to the Colosseum but far quieter, and one of the easier parts of the centre to sit down, work for an hour or take a video call home in the middle of the day.
• Prati and the Vatican — The grid of wide streets keeps a connection steady, but once you are inside the museums or St Peter's it is worth having the ticket saved as a file, because anything that needs loading indoors takes its time.

Day trips out of the city

• Ostia Antica — The suburban train runs straight out from the city with a connection the whole way, but inside the excavations themselves, open ground with nothing tall nearby, speeds thin out noticeably, so download the site plan before you go through the gate.
• Tivoli — It is a hill town, so the climb up gives you short dips, and inside the terraced gardens of Villa d'Este the lower levels down in the ravine hold noticeably less than the top terrace.
• Castelli Romani — The hill villages around Lake Albano sit on volcanic ridges, and the winding wooded roads between them drop in and out, so if you are driving yourself save that area of the map offline first.
