Best eSIM for Europe in 2026: can one eSIM cover several countries?

The European Union lets mobile users call, text and use data in other member countries at the price they pay at home. It covers the 27 member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Moldova and Ukraine, runs to 2032, and applies fair-use limits to open data bundles.

The rule applies to subscribers with a stable link to an EU or EEA country, which a Thai SIM does not have. A regional Europe eSIM issued by a European operator may work across borders under the plan's own terms (the EU page does not confirm that part), so read the country list the brand gives.

Regional or single-country plan

A single-country plan fits a long stay in one place, such as two weeks in Italy. A regional plan fits a route through several countries because you buy and install once. The trade-off is that the country list may be incomplete and the GB allowance is shared across all of them.

Checking the country list

The word Europe on a product page does not mean the same set of countries at every brand. Open the country list and go through every stop on your route.

Crossing borders by train

On a cross-border train the phone switches networks by itself. If the plan is a regional one covering both countries, nothing more is needed. If the destination is not on the list, data stops as soon as you cross the border, so download tickets and maps before boarding.

• A fixed GB plan suits light users and is easy to budget.
• Unlimited suits heavy users, but several brands slow down after a daily threshold.

Compare the current price of each model for your exact number of days, because prices change weekly.

Choosing a brand by what you need

Because the network at the destination belongs to local operators, brands differ more in terms than in signal. These are the questions to ask yourself.

• Do you want to top up mid-trip? If so, look at brands that still offer it and read when the added data starts counting.
• Are you buying far ahead? Activation windows differ: Nomad uses 60 days and Ubigi 6 months.
• Do you need Thai on screen? The Saily app has no Thai, while Airalo has a Thai website.
• Does the refund policy matter? It varies, and some only refund before installation.

On data volume: a trip built around maps, train tickets and booking apps does not use much. If you upload video or share a hotspot often, allow more and check whether the plan permits hotspot or caps it.
