Taiwan networks and the 3G question
Taiwan has three main operators: Chunghwa Telecom, FarEasTone and Taiwan Mobile. Our plan pages list which network each plan uses, and with other brands you should look on the product page too, since some do not say which operator they connect to.
Reports say Taiwan's 3G network was switched off at the end of 2018, leaving 4G and 5G only. We could not confirm this on an official page, but any phone that supports eSIM already runs on 4G, so it should not affect most travellers.

Sizing a 5 to 10 day trip
Taiwan has trains, buses and ride apps that all need data, and a typical trip uses around 1 to 2GB a day. Match the plan model to how you actually use your phone.
- Fixed GB for the whole trip: fine for light use such as maps and translation. It often covers 5 days, but watch how fast you burn through it
- Daily cap: easy to budget and suited to trips up to 10 days, for example Nomad Day Plans. Check what speed you get once the daily quota runs out
- Unlimited: for people who film, stream or share a hotspot with others. Every brand has a normal-use ceiling, so read where the slowdown starts
On a 7 to 10 day trip that adds another country alongside Taiwan, a regional package is often simpler because you do not switch profiles midway.
Airport SIM at Taoyuan versus an eSIM
Taoyuan airport has counters from Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and FarEasTone in the arrivals hall. You clear immigration, collect your bag, pass customs and only then buy, with your original passport for registration. Queues can form when several flights land together.
An eSIM can be installed at home before the flight and switched on at arrival, so you can message your hotel or open a ride app straight away. A counter SIM still makes sense for anyone whose phone does not support eSIM.
Entry rules and what to keep in mind
- A data-only eSIM has no phone number, so keep your Thai SIM in the phone for bank OTP texts
- Install before flying, then check that mobile data is set to the eSIM and that data on the Thai SIM is off

Plan on roughly 1 to 2GB a day. Maps and chat sit at the low end, while streaming or hotspot sharing pushes you up, or you can pick a daily-cap plan that refreshes every day.
How early can I buy an eSIM?+
It depends on the brand. Nomad needs activation within 60 days, SIM2Fly and GO Travel must be used abroad within 60 days, and Airalo states no fixed deadline. Read the terms of the plan you choose.
