Hangzhou and Suzhou guide from Shanghai, with a 2-4 day plan

Jawapan ringkas

  • Hangzhou and Suzhou fit into 2-4 days and connect with Shanghai by high-speed rail.
  • Hangzhou offers West Lake, Lingyin Temple and Longjing tea; Suzhou offers classical gardens and water towns.
  • Book trains on 12306, check station names such as Hangzhou East, and verify garden reservations on the official apps.

Why pair Hangzhou and Suzhou

Hangzhou (杭州) and Suzhou (苏州) both sit a short high-speed rail ride from Shanghai. A well-known Chinese saying praises them as paradise on earth. Hangzhou is known for West Lake, temples and tea plantations; Suzhou for classical gardens and canal towns. Together they suit travellers who want a calmer break from the big cities.

Hangzhou: West Lake

West Lake (西湖) is a World Heritage landscape with waterside paths, old bridges, the Su Causeway (苏堤) and the Bai Causeway (白堤). You can walk or cycle round it over a full day, or take a small boat. Mornings and evenings are less crowded. Notable stops include Broken Bridge (断桥) and Leifeng Pagoda (雷峰塔); check opening conditions on the official channel.

Lingyin Temple and Longjing tea villages

Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺) is an ancient Buddhist temple in a wooded valley west of the lake. Beside it stands Feilai Feng (飞来峰), covered in stone carvings. Dress modestly and respect worshippers. The Longjing (龙井) villages produce the famous green tea, with terraced plantations, tea houses and shops where you can sit and taste. Choose a trustworthy venue and ask where the leaves come from before buying.

Some tea-village shops invite you to taste and then push high-priced packs. Agree the terms before sitting, check prices on the app or posted signs, and feel free to buy nothing.

Suzhou: the classical gardens

Several of Suzhou's classical gardens hold World Heritage status. Two popular ones are the Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园), the largest, with ponds and pavilions laid out in harmony, and the Lingering Garden (留园), known for its long corridors and ornamental rocks. Some gardens may require timed reservations, so check the official app or website first.

Pingjiang Road and the water towns of Tongli and Zhouzhuang

Pingjiang Road (平江路) runs along a canal in Suzhou's old town, lined with tea houses, cafes and white-walled houses with grey tiled roofs, perfect for an evening stroll. The water towns of Tongli (同里) and Zhouzhuang (周庄) lie on the outskirts, with stone bridges and narrow canals. Tongli is generally calmer; Zhouzhuang is better known and often busier. One of them is enough for half a day.

On food, Hangzhou offers local dishes such as West Lake Fish in Vinegar Sauce (西湖醋鱼) and shrimp stir-fried with Longjing tea leaves, while Suzhou is known for gently sweet cooking and seasonal pastries. If you eat vegetarian or have dietary limits, keep a short Chinese phrase ready to show staff, and see our regional China food guide.

Book on the official 12306 app in English with your foreign passport, carry the same passport on board, and arrive early for security. See our high-speed rail booking guide for details.

Thai ordinary-passport holders can currently enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days per entry for tourism, business, family visits and transit. Rules can change; confirm with the Chinese embassy or consulate and the National Immigration Administration (last checked October 2026). Hotels register guests using their passport.

A few timing tips. Coming from Shanghai, do Hangzhou first because West Lake fills a whole day, then Suzhou, which splits easily into half-days. Suzhou's gardens are busiest mid-morning and on holidays; going early makes for easier walking and better photos. Hangzhou gets very crowded during Chinese public holidays, so book rooms ahead and allow extra time to get from the station into town. Didi or the metro both work well.

Map apps such as Amap or Baidu Maps show Chinese place names accurately. Where possible, save the Chinese names of your destinations to show a driver.

  2. 2Day 2: Lingyin and teaLingyin Temple, then Longjing tea villages, before the train to Suzhou.
  3. 3Day 3: Suzhou gardensHumble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, then Pingjiang Road in the evening.
  4. 4Day 4: Water townTongli or Zhouzhuang, then back to Shanghai.

Internet and payments

Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram and Gmail are usually not reachable on mainland Chinese networks or hotel Wi-Fi. A travel eSIM from a non-Chinese provider usually routes data through a gateway outside the mainland, like roaming, which is why those apps usually open on it. Nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so test before relying on it, and keep your Thai SIM on for SMS and bank OTPs. Alipay and WeChat Pay accept foreign Visa and Mastercard; set them up and verify your passport before the trip, and carry cash and a physical card as backup. See our guide on credit cards with Alipay and WeChat.
