How to set up WeChat with a Thai number before China
Sign up for WeChat, verify identity, and use mini-programs, translation and payments during a China trip.

Jawapan ringkas
- Register WeChat in Thailand before flying with a Thai number for the SMS, because a friend may be asked to verify you.
- Payments also need a linked card and passport check before the trip, so carry cash as backup.
- Keep the Thai SIM for SMS and have a backup channel in case the account is restricted.
What WeChat is and why a visitor needs it
WeChat (微信, Weixin in Chinese) is the chat app most people in China use every day. It is similar to LINE in Thailand but does far more: chat, Moments posts, food ordering, museum booking and payments. Many shops, hotels and guides in China communicate mainly through WeChat, so having an account before you fly makes the trip easier.
The key point is to register and verify while you are still in Thailand, because verification needs an SMS and sometimes another user's help, which is hard to arrange once you are on the road.

Creating an account with a Thai number
- 1Install the appInstall WeChat from the App Store or Google Play while you are still in Thailand. Store access can differ inside China, so do this at home.
- 2Choose phone sign-upTap Sign up, choose the +66 country code and enter your Thai number without the leading 0. Accept the terms of service.
- 3Enter the SMS codeWeChat sends a code to your Thai number. The Thai SIM must be able to receive SMS, so keep it active for this step.
- 4Set a name and passwordSet a display name (Latin letters are fine) and a password you do not use anywhere else.
- 5Pass the safety checkThe app may ask an existing WeChat user to confirm you, or add extra checks. This is possible but not guaranteed, so line up a friend who already has an account.

Identity verification and payments
Paying with WeChat Pay means linking a foreign card and verifying your identity with a passport. Finish this before you fly and use the same passport you will travel with. The step-by-step is in our guide to linking cards with Alipay and WeChat Pay, so it is not repeated here.
- Enter your name and passport number exactly as on the document.
- Carry some cash and a physical card as backup; a payment app may not work at every shop.
Before flying, try every feature with a friend: send messages, make a voice call, share a location and scan a QR code, so you know where each button sits. Once you are in China you will not have to hunt through menus at a shop counter with a queue behind you. Also set the app language to English or Thai from the start, and save your own WeChat ID in a note so you can give it to a shop or guide straight away.

Features visitors use most
| Ciri | Apa yang ia lakukan | Petua |
|---|---|---|
| Chat and voice notes | Talk to shops, hotels, guides and friends | Long-press a message to translate it |
| Moments (朋友圈) | Photo posts for your friends, like Instagram | Set the audience before posting |
| QR friend add | Add someone by scanning their code | The usual way people swap contacts in China |
| Mini-programs (小程序) | Order food, book museums, use metro QR codes in many cities | Availability depends on the city and may need verification |
Mini-programs are small apps that run inside WeChat with no extra install: museum booking pages, menus you scan at the table, or metro QR codes. Most are in Chinese, so the in-app translation or a camera translator helps, but double-check museum or station names against official information.

Translation and adding friends
Long-press a message and choose Translate to read it in your set language. It works well for messages from hosts or guides. To add friends, open the Me tab and show your own QR code, or tap + at the top right and choose Scan.
Keeping the account safe
- Lock the app with a passcode or Face ID and never lend a phone that is logged in.
- Do not tap odd links or send money to someone you just met in chat.
- Never share SMS codes, even with someone claiming to be staff.
- Keep one account and avoid logging in on many devices without need.
If the account gets restricted
A new account tied to a foreign SIM, logins from several countries in a short time, or behaviour the system sees as risky can lead to a temporary restriction. If it happens, follow the on-screen instructions, use WeChat's help and appeal options, and keep your passport handy. Do not open duplicate accounts, which can make things worse.
Staying online for WeChat
WeChat is a Chinese app, so it normally works on mainland networks. The sign-up SMS needs the Thai SIM, while mobile data during the trip is commonly handled by a travel eSIM. Install it before flying and test the apps you need before relying on them.
Soalan lazim
Can I sign up without a Chinese number?+
Usually yes, the code goes to your Thai SIM. A data-only eSIM has no phone number and cannot receive SMS, so keep the Thai SIM.
Do I need passport verification just to chat?+
Basic chat usually does not, but payments and some features need identity verification. Check in the app for the current requirement.
What if I have no friend to verify me?+
Ask a friend or relative with WeChat, or follow any alternative steps in the app. If still stuck, use WeChat's help channels.
